Lots of musicians in the last few posts and I see some familiar faces. The three grinning jazz players in post 55945 are, from left, trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, drummer Joe Morrello, and pianist Dave Brubeck.
Looks like that might be Lorretta Lynn directly under the Corvair in post 55941. Looks like a Fender Dreadnaught she's holding.

Thanks for the background info about the ending!!! "The Horse Soldiers", "Fort Apache", "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" and "Rio Grande" are 4 of my favorite movies of all time. I had a Great Great Great Grandfather and a Great Great Grandfather ( not related to each other at the time, Grx3's grandaughter married GrX2's son years later) that were troopers in Co. B of the Kansas 7th Cavalry, aka "Jennison's Jayhakers", and a Great Great Grandfather who was a Sergeant in the Illinois 80th Infantry during the Civil War. Both units were operating in Tennessee and upper Mississippi about the time of Grierson's Raid. Although the Kansas 7th had a bit of a tarnished reputation due to some of their activities early in the war in the Kansas-Missouri border area, the Jayhawking to be exact, I still find it kind of cool to have a family connection. Both my ancestors in the 7th were part of a group from Illinois that volunteered to fight for Kansas in 1861 as Illinois had met it's "quota" at the time and wasn't accepting more volunteers. They had no idea where they would end up, it was just the "luck" of the draw that found them assigned to the Jayhawkers. At least they weren't part of Sen. Lane's "Red Legs" (The Outlaw Josey Wales) another infamous Kansas cavalry unit..... In reality the Jayhawkers were just as bad, they just didn't get made part of a Clint Eastwood movie. From my research it seems the opening scenes of The Outlaw Josey Wales was historically quite accurate but both sides were equally guilty. A very dark part of our country's history they didn't dwell on in history class, now I doubt they even mention it.

Most likely to keep the dust from pouring into the rear window.

I have 60s wagons, live on a dirt road & wish I had one of those big flaps. I remember they had them with peace signs and other stuff on them up into the early 70s.

    Oops - no, it's not O.Z. Whitehead - it's Hoot Gibson.

Hoot Gibson it IS! ;) I didn't know when I quizzed other HAMBers. One of the biggest B-Western stars of the '20s, Hoot did his first of hundreds of Westerns in 1910. He made and lost a couple of fortunes -- not unusual for a movie star, right? Hollywood legend has it that Hoot did old buddy John Ford "a favor" by doing a cameo in "The Horse Soldiers." Maybe:rolleyes:, but both Wayne and Ford often were the ones doing favors by giving bit parts to old friends or Western stars whose tin stars had lost their shine. Anywho, this was Hoot's last Western appearance. "Oceans 11" in 1960 was his very last role, and he passed on in '62 of cancer at age 70.

Strictly by the numbers, he was the heavyweight champ just shy of 12 years, pretty much double most anybody else. I'm sure he fought some pretty tough, skilled boxers, but my dad remembers when he hit a long stretch of fighting stiffs. People would ask who "he bum of the month" was, scheduled to fight Louis. The boxing world has had some interesting episodes, fer shur!

Speaking of "The Brown Bomber," here are three heavyweight champs in one frame! Joe Louis, right, "Sugar Ray" Robinson, center, and the then-new champ Cassius Clay, soon to take the Muslim name Muhammad Ali.
