Andy DeVine was one of the true good guys in show business.
He was married to his one wife from 1933 to his death in 1977,
which says a lot. Though he loved comedy roles (famously
with Guy Madison in TV's "Wild Bill Hickock. "Hey, Wild Bill!"),
he could shift at the drop of a hat to serious roles, like his
contemporary, Walter Brennan.

"Pluck your magic twanger, Mister Froggie, or there'll
be NO CRACKER for you!" Unlike "Howdy Doody," Andy's
show was off-the-wall nonsense -- sort of like, somewhere
between "The Tonight Show" and "Soupy Sales" But just
for kids! Photo is THANKS to ioffer.

 

Nads, I pretty much agree on the '58/9 Plymouth finned cars,
though you're right, the Continental kit looks right at home!
But I think the '57 Fury is a work of art. (A six-inch shorter WB,
and it could have compared well against the '57 Chevy.)

Jackie Gleason had been on the radio version

CLARIFICATION: For the record. Wm. Bendix was Chester Riley
ON RADIO AND the '49 MOVIE. After Jackie Gleason played Ches-
ter in the first TV season, Bendix carried the role for the rest of
the TV series.

Anybody out there realize that this show actually
ran from '51 all the way through '59? Before that,
it was on radio, from '46, right after the war. Wow!



Kirby Grant as Sky King with Gloria Winters as his niece, Penny, and Ron Hagerthy
as his nephew, Clipper. In real life, Grant was a civilian pilot, and Winters' hubby
was a cropduster pilot. Grant had been turned down for flight training in WWII due
to color blindness. Though the life-and-death plots rather paralleled those of the
"Superman" series, the original concept was probably loosely based on a real-life
pilot of the '30s: one Jack Cones, "The Flying Constable."

Not exactly. William Bendix was Riley on the radio and even in the 1949 feature film "The Life of Riley". Jackie Gleason was drafted for the first season of the TV show due to contractual issues. Bendix took over the TV role as well from the second season on. Rosemary DeCamp was Peg on the radio version and Marjorie Reynolds for the Bendix TV version.

With regard to Andy's Playhouse, Andy was the successor to Smilin' Ed McConnell who did the show on radio and TV and died. Andy then took it over.

1954 Buick Wildcat II show car. They made three versions,I,II,III. First two still exist.

Probably already been posted before, but like someone wrote "Haven't seen it this week".
A vehicle ahead of its time was this 1955 GMC L'Universelle. A modified version of it was set for production but was terminated due to the escalating costs of producing it. The design was ultimately replaced by the Corvair-based Greenbriar a few years later. Presumably, the L'Universelle, a non-running show vehicle, was scrapped.

I have a question/request. Does anyone have pictures of the NYC Washington Street produce market?? This was quite famous for many decades. It was moved in the late 60's to become the site of the NYC word trade center.

The blue 32 sedan was owned by John Otis from Braintree , MA. Car was up for sale on Ebay a 1n 2011.

 

Sorry but if I had that car I would chop it about 4" and that would be a bad ass car! I mean it already is but I think that would really make that car! Jim
