We found this incredible film from the Library of Congress (click here to watch it) in it a group of men
forge weld one area of a large ring. They use the heat from a fire and weld it the old fashioned blacksmith way, after multiple heats and much hand and steam hammering. Take a few minutes to watch this fascinating look back at how it was done well over 100 year ago. The ring is presumably a piece of a generator or motor.

The film was made by the American Mutoscope and Biograph Company during 1904 and filmed by
camera man, G.W. “Billy” Bitzer. The film above was shot on April 18, 1904, at the Westinghouse
Electric & Manufacturing Co. in East Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

  5. We moved to Texas from Indiana in '55. Oil was still a big deal here, but I'm having trouble getting my head around all these derricks!
Keeping in the spirit of the thread, and for the sake of those of us that are into the history of it, does someone have any pics of Signal Hill from say, the '50s or '60s? Never been farther South than Palm Desert. Thanks, Mike

I had a "Popular Science" type magazine from the 50s or early 60s (I got a full pick up load of "How To" magazines from my uncles they had subs to every one out for 30 years!) Anyway it showed how one oil company had fake "office buildings " that were just hiding their drill rigs in the city it was just a big box that covered the rig outside it looked like most other city structures! I have to wonder at the water quality at these houses !"LUCKY" residents get free gas? Imagine the law suits this would bring today!I know of one case here in Ct. where a shop owner bought a closed gas station that had the pumps gone 20 years. a house next to it found gas in the well water and the new shop owner had to pay to connect the house to city water and pay the yearly water bill for the house owner as long as he lived there, This guy didn't even know that there were tanks on the property still he had been told they were "taken care of"

Amazing films David. It blows my mind how hard these guys worked. The heat and the noise and smoke must have been incredible! I don't think any of them are wearing gloves and watch the guys brush the hot slag off they're arms. To see those guys move that huge hunk of steel and beat the daylights out of it is unreal. They all worked as a team to forge a piece of America.
