Very well the flat head 8 had loads of tourque, not on the high end

  5. Didn't all DeSotos of this vintage have the flat 6 engine?

  6. Being as there's no automatic shut off on that nozzle he ought to mind what he's doing!

  7. That would have been a six, but they were powerful.

  8. Yes.

  10. Check out the SHOES they're wearing up there.....

  11. I have been a Union Ironworker 34 years and most structural hands I know always wore a boot with a completely flat sole so the heel wouldn't catch on the beam being walked on and make you lose yer balance and throw you in "the hole"...

  12. Well well....you sissies had fall protection... we were "wingin it"!!!!

Yeah, you got us there but falling 40odd thousand feet without it would suck a lot more than................you know what? I think we all would have made terminal velocity on the way down, that sudden stop at the end is going to hurt just as much!!

    Doc.:D

Assuming the DeS is hooked up, it's sitting pretty level, and that doesn't look to be a Desi/Luci type trailer.:) Even before this model, DeSotos with OD could make 90 on a flat, but that's not the point here.

If that's a '49, it would have have (I seem to recall) a 236 SIX with much of the torque of the workhorse Dodge trucks. And torque (with respectable hp) is the combo people would have been looking for at that time, for towing.

Of course, by '52 DeS had the new Firedome Hemi 8 available -- DeSoto's first eight since the early '30s. But that, too, is beside the point.

Pretty much, MoPars had struck a good balance among: reasonable hp, fuel economy, and very reliable torque in the later '30s and through the '40s. So, I think it would have done the job that, say, a Plymouth of the era would have had to struggle at.

Okeydokey, looked up some stats that might pertain to the DeSoto's capability to tow that size of trailer.

    About 3,500+ pounds on a 126-inch WB. Bore, 3-7/16"; Stroke, 4.25. 7/1 comp. 112hp@3,600 and 195 torque @ only 1,600. 10" dry clutch; 3.73 differential.
