Interesting story, killed by his own money!

Tom Mix starred in approximately 350 movies and was the "King of Cowboys" when John Wayne was just a youngster. On October 12, 1940, while driving his Cord between Tucson and Phoenix, AZ, Mix crashed in a construction zone on Route 79 and was killed almost instantly. The 60-year-old actor was unable to brake in time and his 812 rolled into a gully. He had been hit in the head by an aluminum suitcase with cash, traveler’s checks and jewelry that had been on the package shelf. The gully was later named “Tom Mix Wash” and a plaque on SR 79 is inscribed, In Memory of Tom Mix.

Good goin', guys! I SALUTE you, ID'ing these folks from that small photo! I really fell down on Spencer Tracy, despite the hat. :( Fun test. Wish we could do this more often on this thread. (The other day, the Alan Hale Sr/Jr thing really educated me!) Fun stuff! THANKS.

Yup, buddy. Tom Mix didn't have a Yakima Canutt to do his stunts. Main reason he finally stopped making movies was all the times he and Tony (I and II) got busted up doing their own real-time stunts, right on camera. What a guy. That's integrity -- something lacking in today's world, if I may say so.

Sadly, many of Tom Mix's earlier flicks are lost for good:(, for various reasons. Studios often didn't conserve very well in the early days, maybe because they didn't have a crystal ball to see what the movies would MEAN to future generations. Another BIG one was that so many were shot on inflammable cellulose-based film stock, not the more modern "safety" film stocks.

Well, anywho, Tom Mix really IS a film legend, and deservedly so, paving the way for generations of actors and stunt men who love the genre of the Western (which, of course, has been loved worldwide!).:D

The four flipping off are left to right,

Lew Smith, Barbara Stanwyk(big valley fame), Clark Gable(frankly scarlett I don't give a damn), and Bill Hickman(driver of Black Charger in Bullit)

probably taken on the set of "to please a lady"

  28. Dick Shawn to the left of Terry Thomas and Rochester in the far right.
