And something you probably didn't know. Earl Muntz wanted to own a Tucker so badly that he traded a brand new 1951 Muntz Jet for a slightly used 1948 Tucker. (remember many of the Tuckers weren't sold until the plant auction in October of 1950).

If I'm not mistaken, the burglar in the Mattel commercial is actor Hal Smith who played
"Otis, the Town Drunk" on the Andy Griffith Show from 1960 all the way through 1967.
Remembering all the Ford & Merc cars in that show, I looked on the 'net to see if good
old Otis ever got pinched by Sheriff Andy and Deputy Barney Fife for drunk driving.
Bingo!

Apparently a flop at motoring under the influence, Otis also tried a more
"eco-friendly" mode of transport! Again, only to be nabbed by his friends.
What a great running joke it was: Otis "arresting" himself and checking in-
to his jail cell, then hanging the keys right outside the door! They just
don't make TV like that anymore. The "A.G. Show" was wholesome with-
out seeming to be moralizing. Never a swear word, never an off-color
crack. Just honest laughs from a larger-than-life small town. I miss May-
berry's obvious innocence in that pre-Vietnam era!







TRIVIA: Griffith and Knotts said that in real life, Smith was anything
but a reprobate. He was a regular church member and did not drink.
He was married to the same woman from 1936 until her death in '91.

The MGM movie crew, including handsome Clark Gable, the top box office star of the era, was in John’s pit box during the race. (1950) They had become close to each other and they were cheering him on. They watched as chief mechanic Harry Stephens kept giving John “EZY” signals. John felt this same tactic had cost him a win during last year’s race, so John wasn’t about to slow down even though he had a lap on the field. Growing tired of the continuing “EZY” signals, John flashed a sign of his own to Stephens. The universal one finger salute. The MGM people got a real kick out of it.
At Milwaukee for the June 11th race, John received a large envelope via special delivery at a cost of 21 cents. It was from MGM’s J. L. Smith, one of the MGM Indy Pit observers. Inside was an 8x10 photo of Lew Smith, Barbara Stanwyck, Clark Gable, and Bill Hickman (stunt driver). In the photo each of them were giving the famous one finger salute mocking Parsons’ message to Stephens.”
All four are seen in the auto racing movie “To Please a Lady” (1950).
