The Old Motor Feature Series – New York to Paris Great Race of 1908 – Part 4

In early 1908 preparations were frantically being made in Europe with teams from Italy, France and Germany building automobiles that would carry them around the world. The effort equaled what we witnessed in our lifetimes preparing for a journey to the moon. Take a trip to The Old Motor and see many more interesting photos and learn the details of the start of the race in the continuing story by Jeff Mahl.

  8. Knew a guy back in High School that had one of these, tho a hard top. Had a V8 60 in it. Quite the little sleeper... Surprised a lot of SBC's.

  14. In 1962 I walked in to a local Chevy dealer wanting to order a turbocharged Corvair Spyder. After having the salesman try to sell me everything but what I wanted, I said screw it and bought a 57 Corvette from an local individual instead.

Those machines were very helpful but I believe a lot of mechanics didn`t understand how to use the data to troubleshoot a problem. So they got pushed to the side.
Reminds me of a time in the 70`s when I went to a local shop to get an inspection. While waiting I watched the owner hook up a sun machine and before he could finish looking at the screen I told him he had a burnt valve. He looked at me and wanted to know how I knew what the problem was. I just told him to listen. Where I worked my boss used a long radiator hose and a long screwdriver to troubleshoot engine problems.

I have seen this car in person. I have a ton of pics I took last summer at the Citizen's Motor Car Co. I'll post 'em if there is any interest.

That is the Jesse Vincent Speedster (Vincent being chief engineer at Packard). A good friend restored the car. There is a thread on the car entitled something like, early factory hot rod the Jesse Vincent Speedster. Pretty cool car.

Post your pics in that thread-do a thread search-Jim

Love the shot of the 56/57 Corvette up on the stage where they're offering a free "Kiddie Corvette". Neeto, Thanks
