These are just two of many photos we have in a post called, Airships and Automobiles : Twenty Years Downwind filled with Zeppelin info and photos on The Old Motor.

There's a FlickR link that shows a B&W version of the outfit and has a bit of info. But it doesn't say if the wagon survived to modern times, unfortunately. Search "1958 Ford Wagon with camping outfit." Says the photos were featured in "Ford TIMES," as well as in an apparently Ford-sponsored book series, Station Wagon Living Really, this was still during that temporal window when Ford was being VERY creative (even if this concept wagon may have verged on fanciful). I'll bet folks at shows gathered 'round, even if it did not make it to production. What the hey? Ideas are the life blood of autos, right?

Like all cars we see on this thread, the ones that didn't catch on when produced, seem to be the ones most wanted today. How cool would it be to cruise around in a "Swiss Army Wagon" built by Ford. I would.

You have to wonder what this thing would be worth today if it exists.

What would the tent thing on the roof be used for it does not look long enough to lay down in.Or is the roof cut out so you could stand up in the car.

  10. Maybe someone will come up with a magazine article or brochure that shows more about the functionality of the thing. I'm guessing that the tentlike thing on top would be the delight of the kiddies.

Doesn't matter. The contraption for the boat is not workable as pictured.
Hard to believe anyone would take it serious.

I don't see why not. Roost tents are currently available, and not cheap. they are designed to sleep or sit in, not stand up. It appears that the cover for this one is rigged up to serve as a boat. Most of the roost tents now have a hard cover that serves as a roof at an angle like some of the pop-up VW vans. This was probably a prototype of someone's invention that did not take off for a variety of reasons. .

  14. There are more comments and quotes on this thread than photos lately. I sure hope we haven't run out of material to post because a lot of people sure enjoy the photos on this thread.I especially like the common everyday street scenes that tell so much without actually having a central focus.

I don't see anything that tells me it won't work either. I see lots of belts and pulleys. Would it work well? It is practical? Probably not.

That's why I'd like to hear more about it. It sort of looks like the tent on the top is just a skylight for the beds below. Seems like it all folds down and the boat flips over and goes on top of it all. Ford had built the Skyliner and made it sort of work. The same sort of technology would work on this boat. Besides, it just looks cool.

  28. This Mustang appears to be the base model '65 (or '64 1/2). 6 cylinder, standard wheel covers, I don't even see a radio antenna, and am not sure if the whitewalls were standard or optional. Not sure but I think the base price on them was just under $2K.
