In defense of old time photogs... black ink on a negative blocks light, so the lettering looks white in the print. Using some sort of sharp pin or pick gives the black lettering. Depending on the size of the negative and the printing method, the studio might have to write backwards on the negative to get the words to appear sharp. Hard to do. If you do your markings on the wrong side, or the negative gets flipped in printing, then some things will turn out wrong-reading no matter what your intent. Keep in mind that the negatives need to be marked some how, so that when reprints are requested the studio could find the negative. Pensmanship wasn't important, the data was. Some of this could get cropped out in the printing or framing, if too unsightly. And lastly, some of the negatives were small, so the writing had to be small and / or backwards! Gary, IMO, you wrapped it all up there. Also, it was PREVIOUSLY a wee bit easier to file negs back when they were on glass, as the emulsion scratched ID info easier than later photographic stocks (prior to "Safety Film"). All in all, I'd rather see even crude attempts to ID and date negs than to leave future generations to WONDER what was pictured. Thanks, Gary!

How about an airliner made of plywood! Anybody know about the aircraft carrier docked at Tacoma, used to provide temporary electrical power to the city.
