Too cool. In my mind that has Cadilac written all over it.
It says "City of Las Vegas" in the window. As far as I know only Union Pacific went through Vegas and the station was right downtown at the end of Fremont St.

Short answer 'Yes', the ship was mothballed at pier 88 after her last crossing of the Atlantic (139th) when her home port in France was occupied by Germany. Sadly she never sailed again, welding sparks set fire to a pile of kapok life-jackets on the 9th Jan 42'. The fire rapidly spread as a great deal of supplies were stacked on-board as the conversion to 'Troop Ship' was almost completed.
Poor firefighting techniques resulted in the ship turning 'turtle' at her berth.

This is a 1927 (? May be later, can't quite recall! Only 4 of these were built.) Lockheed Explorer, set up to fly the first non stop trans-pacific crossing from the US to Japan. The attempt ended at Tacoma field when the overloaded fuel tanks spilled fuel on take off resulting in the aircraft landing again very heavily and crashing shortly after take off.

    Cheers,

  9. Yes Doc, I understand that the fuel expanded and overflowed the tank, and ended up getting into the eyes of the pilot, blinding him, causing the crash shortly after take-off. Here's a bunch more Tacoma pics.

  10. I really like the Garford trucks, which are the beginnings of Kenworth trucks, a Tacoma success story, needless to say.

This 1950 Buick E Kineno is a Roadmaster modified by Buick and GM Styling for Richard Kleberg, boss of the King Ranch in Texas. Designed to be driven off road, the car has winch, heavy-duty radiator, skid plates, and bigger tires.

Yep. The fins might say Cadilac, but the bodies were modified GM bus bodies. The UP leased one of the two Areotrains from GM for 9 months.

Wow! That model is awesome! Looks like a Lockheed Model 10 Electra. Early prototypes had the single tail, production models went to the split vertical stabilisers.

Reason Buick in Springfield, Illinois: The results of postwar new car buying fever is very much in evidence in the number of late model sedans seen here at used car department of Reason Buick in Springfield, Illinois. Stop by The Old Motor where you can see this interesting photo from the Joe Sonderman collection in two enlargements for even more detail.
