Trees on Mt. Hood (Oregon) still show scars from the ropes used to assist wagons down the steep parts from the Oregon Trail, although not sure what the freighters would use in addition to the drags they set on the wheels in treeless areas.

I think Buster Keaton worked for Hal Roach , and his props people were great. watch any Our Gang or Laural and Hardy film for plenty of proof.

 

The paint job on those Apollo 12 "AstroVettes" was conceived by Tucker designer Alex Tremulis. He drew them up to be like the 1964 version of his record-setting Triumph Gyronaut from 1964 with a gold/black theme and red, white and blue logos. The Gyronaut was first painted to look like the 2-wheeled little brother to the Summers Brothers' Goldenrod streamliner. The idea was to have both the world's fastest car and world's fastest motorcycle matching colors.

Astronaut Alan Bean picked a combination of the three designs, including the logo, and had it painted up by Indy 500 winner and Chevrolet dealer Jim Rathmann. Looking back, Bean wished he had thought of using Navy Blue instead of the black, to match their service in the Navy.

There are still the two other AstroVettes out there somewhere waiting to be found for you Corvette treasure hunters, both identical to Alan Bean's car.

Ever hear the term "Balls to the Walls"?

Well each throttle lever had little metal ball on top and when they were "Wide Open" and "All out" escaping danger or in pursuit of an enemy... they would use the phrase "Balls to the walls" because the throttle balls would be jammed right up to the firewall.

 

Back to "the whole nine yards", a version I grew up hearing referred to the capacity of the domestic coal trucks that delivered to small buisnesses and residences back in the day. They may have had partitions so they could parcel it out as needed.

Usually the rear wheels of the wagons were chained to the wagon bed to serve as a brake or sometimes a log was simply dragged down the mountain behind the wagons.
