On line there is a program ftom the 67 Orange bowl Regatta a California boat namef Phfft is listed as a Rayson craft owned by Rudy Ramos. Butch Peteron is listed firt inthe program perhaps as the driver. But this shows the boat powered by a 427 ford. the picture here looks earlier as teh cars show are 59 Ford, 63 Chrysler wagon, and a 60 buick. The ford Pickup looks to be a early 60's vintage. The engine look like non turbo/blower Allison. By 67 Allison parts were getting hard to find and expensive, so maybe a change out was done by 67.

But Rudy Ramos' bigger, tougher, Allison-powered 22-footer Phfft-Cream Puff plowed through lap after lap without a murmur. Ramos had taken no chances. All summer long he had been putting his boat through her paces in the roughest Pacific seas he could find to make sure she could take it. She could and did. With about half of the fleet swamped or otherwise discommoded, Phfft-Cream Puff swept easily across the finish line at a little before 2:30 on Sunday afternoon a good two laps ahead of runner-up Doug Fowler, driving another Ramos boat. Rudy himself was not at the wheel. His relief man, roly-poly Ed Olsen, a baker whose trade gave the boat its name, finished the race in 7 hours 26 minutes 58.2 seconds to set a new course record by one hour and 10 minutes.

"Super Cinders" was Bob Patterson's boat, the earlier photo is Rudy Raymos's "Cream Puff". Several Allison V-Drives were made for endurance racing. They were legislated out of competition after '64.

The F-105 Thunderchief. Known widely as the 'Thud', reputedly because of the sound they made when making an unscheduled high speed encounter with the terrain (Crashing).
Another title they were given by aircrew was the "Triple Threat", it could bomb you, strafe you or fall on you!
Apparently they were not a pilot friendly aircraft and of the 833 built a total of 382 were lost when introduced into service in 1958:eek:. (62 to combat loss in Vietnam, the rest to crashes) They became the first aircraft in USAF history to be taken out of combat service due to overly heavy type losses!
I don't know why but the Thud has always fascinated me!:D

I used to run into a guy who used to frequent the same saloon as I. He told of being a very happy KC-135 driver. Word came down the U.S.A.F. was looking for fighter pilots. Who doesn't want to be a fighter pilot? He volunteered to re train into yea you guessed it F105's. Did 100 missions in "Rolling Thunder". But didn't laugh about it.

Now that is a man I have respect for without ever meeting him! That takes balls of steel to roll in hot, not only over SVN while being shot at but in a 105 with it's 'foibles'!! Going from driving a lounge suite around to pedalling the Mach 2 Thud around, that's the sort of guy John Wayne aspired to be!!

I came across this recently re-discovered circa 1939 NYC film, posted to YouTube. Enjoy!

That's a modern day recreation of Alex Tremulis and Bill Balla's late 1950's Ford X-2000, built by the extremely talented Andy Saunders. In the 1980's, Vauxhall had copied the front half of Ford's X-2000 for an ad campaign and the car eventually ended up in the Beaulieu museum in the U.K. Saunders recognized the front of the car from a dream cars book, managed to acquire the car from the museum, and set forth to recreate Ford's show car based solely on a couple photos.

From what I understand, the X-2000 was originally intended to showcase what the car of the future might look like in the year 2000, but was really meant to soften the public's reaction to the Edsel's front end. Those pods eventually ended up as the taillights for the 1959 Galaxie that Tremulis would later refer to as "mailing tubes".
