    I guess they still were using cloth covering on some of the planes.

    What is sad is the plane is allready inverted on it's way down. Hope the crew got out.

    control surfaces - flaps - were fabric for quite some time yet
     
  11. It just might be that the cloth coverings were less likely to sustain as much damage as the metal skins. A projectile piercing metal skin might cause a panel to rip out the ribs and longerons where it is attached while the cloth covering lets the projectile pass through by making a small slit. And the cloth covering probably takes less time to repair.
