Why did this ad agency distort the photos to the point where it looked like you could land a light aircraft across the hoods???

 

A suggestion for posting pictures -

Check the size before posting; most of us use Microsoft which has a program called 'Paint'. Open the picture in 'Paint' and you will see the picture relative to how it will appear on a standard computer screen. If it is too big it will be outside the standard screen - re-size it to something about 750 pixels wide.

This eliminates the need to scroll right/left to see the picture

Also - you can put multiple pictures in a post, up to 10 or 11 if I remember correctly
This puts more pictures on a page

 

All those "Wide Track" Pontiac illustrations reminded me of a chap I worked with many years ago. He had been an Illustrator and art director at GM in those days and he shared a couple of their tricks. Since the ideas were "bigger is better"...and "wider is better still"...the artwork was stretched dramatically to make the cars look wider, lower and longer. Try and overlay an actual photo of one of them from the same angle and you'll be surprised just how much they "fudged".

But the trick I liked best was when they used actual photographs. Only rarely did they alter the proportions. Instead, they just hired models that were no more than 5 feet tall. Often shorter. They made the car look all that much larger. Ah...truth in advertising. I'm still waiting to see that one.

 

Your suggestions are but 1 of 1000. As a regular contributor, I prefer images 1024-1280 (max). Anything under 640 isn't even worth posting.

Multiple images in a single post works only in a perfect world. Proven repeatedly that commenters in this thread haven't learned to delete 9 other images when merely writing about 1. Taking that factor out of their hands keeps thread progressing smoother than "more images on a page". Quality over quantity.

I've also heard of another trick photographers use to make the subject car look lower in the photograph ... fill it with weights or sandbags to make it sit lower. Of course, now Photoshop makes life easier for everyone

Yeah PhotoShop can do lots of trix...but those hold, hand painted illustrations were sexier than anything that program can put out!

My Dad and i had a running joke about the pin-head family - being used in british advertising, esp BMC; but as to stance - yes, a brochure shoot i worked on always used a wheelbarrow full of lead ingots - in the boot and every footwell, so as to not see inside the wheel arches, i think; they were a japanese crew and language was restricted to things like 'i have XX minis and XX bug-eye sprites ..."
(nice to see artists work is still taken for photography, btw,)
