Over the years the tire mfgs supplied Pikes Peak "Specials" to the racers and they had some pretty gnarly tread designs. BTW- the #37 is the ex- Hinkle/McGrath champ car driven by Jack Hahn in the early 60s. hahn.jpg

And the car was previously owned by R.D. Whittington who was the father of Don, Bill, and Dale Whittington who ended up racing at Indianapolis. R.D. himself tried Pikes Peak a few times in the car as well.
George Bignotti told me that he had a deal with Hinkle to purchase the car after the last race at Phoenix at the end of 1955. The condition was that he would take possession of the car immediately after the race without anything being removed from the car. McGrath was his own mechanic and because the car was being sold he put his oldest and most used parts on the car. According to Bignotti it was because of this that something broke in the front axle assembly causing McGrath to crash fatally.
