One thing I like about these old track photos: No ads, nor on the drivers.

You can thank Andy G. for the concept that every square inch of a car, driver and crew could be used as a billboard. Capture stp 1.JPG Capture stp.JPG

That's a great photo showing the drivers as they run to their cars for the start of the 1966 12 hours of Sebring.

Andy came later. I'm talkin' about those 30s-40s shots. Granatelli, I'm OK with that. I mean, check out them whitewalls!

Rootie, I know you know this... but Le Mans starts were eventually stopped because so many drivers shot away without buckling-up properly. Remember this? I was stationed in Germany in 1969 and Jacky Ickx was (still is) one of my favorite drivers. And while those were the days when a lot of drivers were killed, nobody could believe he pulled off his starting line protest with a win.

"1969 saw the defining moment of his career. Driving with Jacky Oliver in a JWA GT40 MkII, Jacky Ickx refused to take part in the traditional Le Mans running start, where the drivers madly dash across the track to jump in their parked cars. Ickx calmly walked across the track to his car and carefully did up his race harness before finally getting away – dead last. To prove a bitter point, on the first lap John Woolfe in a privateer 917 crashed at the Maison Blanche section near the end of the track and Woolfe was killed; he hadn’t taken the time to do his belts up properly."

There was a red flag for that accident and, of course, Ickx and Oliver won the race proving that the drama and spectacle of those style starts were totally unsafe. Gary

Is 1979 'back in the day' far enough?
