A great photo of Rex Mays being towed through the infield after having ignition problems in one of the Novis in 1949. The crashed car of teammate Duke Nalon can be seen on the wall in the background. Nalon had been leading when the rear axle broke early in the race causing him to crash in flames. Amazingly, the yellow light was only on for something like 1 minute and 50 seconds for the Nalon crash. Once it was determined that Duke was out of the car the green light came back on and the rest of the field just kept racing through the burning fuel that was running down the track and down into the grass. The fire in Nalon's car basically burned itself out and since it was out of the racing groove the car was simply left on the track which was a common practice at the time. Later in the race two wreckers backed up to wall behind the wrecked car and attempted to lift it over the wall with one hooked to the front and one on the back. The Novi was too heavy and there is film of them dropping the car twice before giving up the effort. Nalon's car stayed on the track until after the race was completed. Only then did a big Hyster machine loader of some type finally picked up the car and took it back to the Garage Area. I think there was a photo posted here earlier of the car finally being removed. BTW, the yellow light was used during Mays' tow-in either. If you were out of the racing grooved the green light stayed on and the wrecker crews just stayed out of the way as best they could.

 

I was at a lunch meeting with the local old timers yesterday.... I mean OLD timers. It seems there were two trains of though when you got this far into it... Either hope to get thrown clear so the car didn't crush you or duck down and hang on tight to the torque tube.

Sure is. If you use Windows, get the Microsoft Windows "Snipping tool".
Copy what ever you like on the screen.

I just hit print screen (prt sc) and edit in my folder (cropping and resizing). The real trick is embedding Google street views directly. Use to be able to do it but not sure how now.

 

Yes, your way works ok, but the snipping tool does the size and cropping all in one go. Just draw the line around whatever you want to copy. I find it really quick to do.

This was a direct copy/paste from street view. Couldn't find an old car in SV, so route 66 will have to do. (Sorry Ryan.)
