Could that gizmo on the side fairing be a cylindrical oil cooler? Ifn so, pretty clever, eh? Anyone know? Gary

This particular Maserati was supercharged so that would be the intercooler.

I see. Was it used to cool the incoming air, or to cool the water or oil that then cooled the blower bits? Gary

  6. Very cool! I saw Miller run many times at Woodburn. I was just thinking about this car last night!
    Thanks!

Because of its design I'm pretty sure that the one in the photo is an air-to-air intercooler. There are also air-to-water intercoolers. Here's a link that mentions a little bit about intercoolers toward the end.

BTW, the Maserati brothers used some very innovative design tricks on these particular race cars. There was no belly pan as such in the cockpit area; only a cast X- box across the frame rails that also doubled as the car's oil tank. There was a foot box area for the driver but otherwise the seat was just setting above the open areas in the "X" where you could look down and see the track go by if you wanted. If you dropped something in the cockpit it was going to fall directly onto the racetrack.
