  15. It's pretty in the sunshine, scary as hell when a storm comes off the ocean and you're driving a VW bus and trying not to get blown off the highway.

Rootie, I have been trying to identify this driver but can't come up with an answer. At times I've thought it was Agabashian or even Hartley. Do you happen to know who it is? Thanks for posting!

Here's another photo that I can't quite identify. Rootie, would this be Bob King by any chance?

You're right that is Freddy A. in the midget. Very early on, probably mid 30s.

Rootie, I believe this is a 1949 photo of the George Connor Blue Crown with its new front starter setup. They've come a long way from the rear wheel spinning starter from the year before in your earlier photo. But it also looks like Lou and the boys are trying the thing out for the first time since they've even got the hood open to make sure it's hooked up properly before they spin it up. Henry Meyer invented the "stinger" type starter (using surplus aircraft pieces) for his 1948 stretched Iddings sprint car that Lee Wallard drove to 7th place that year and by the next year a few other teams were starting to copy him. I've seen photos of the 1948 Kurtis entry for Tommy Hinnershitz with an on board starter and the battery cart plugged into the side of the car. But by the time Johnnie Parsons won the 1950 500 in the same car it's being started through the nose. And Kurtis mostly used internal splines in the guide tubes at the front to keep the starter from moving. Quite a few others used a smooth tube with an outrigger type leg to keep everything steady.

Back again with a batch of goodies, mined from state archives of North Carolina and Idaho, with a couple extras to round off the number. The resolution on the Idaho photos isn't as sharp as I'd like, but I cherry-picked the better ones. Seven parts tonight beginning with Part One:

What's that hiding behind the Nash?

Sure looks like a '36-'37 Cord sedan. Zoomed in all the way you can see some extra cooling holes in the hood.
