Gary, now you have offended all those people in Brooklyn labeling this as NYC. Actually Washington St between Water St and Front St looking at the Manhattan Bridge in the section called DUMBO, in later photos you can see the Empire State Building framed by the bridge. Thanks for the great pics.

That car is a rear steer and uses a tiller like a boat does. The entire axle rotates on a pinion and also carries the engine.

I wonder???....is ''this'' the same car, advertised as '' Hitler's" car that was in a 'tourist' attraction in Nevada??? I remember as a kid, my family went to Reno and Las Vegas, and we all saw the car in person at a casino museum (don't remember the name now:confused:). This was back in the early 1970's...but I remember it had bullet holes and cracked glass, and found in a barn in Germany with unknown reason, and left as it was...there was Eva Braun's personal 'stuff' there too....and advertised ''at that time'' as a high profile car in the German hierarchy........it 'may not' be the same car, but sure does look like it, from what I remember.....or am I thinking of Eva Braun's car...a 'gift' from Hitler. My mind is hazy these days:eek:;):)

Yep, things are a good bit quieter in McKeesport these days...

On 5th Avenue, however, the Peoples' Bank Building still stands along with that '50s Modern storefront...

Standard Auto is long-gone from the building on 7th Ave. at Walnut St...

Same story all throughout this area where thriving industries supported the growth of these small cities in the first half of the 2oth century. Sadly, now with the industries gone, there aren't enough jobs at WalMart to support a thriving blue collar middle class that formed the bedrock of these places.

  7. I think that car collection is now at the Imperial Palace Hotel in Las Vegas? (maybe, my memory is hazy as well) - Harrah's 1450+ car collection got sold off after he passed and now 230 are at a museum in Reno - can't remember which one has the Hitler car.

edit: I see Caesars has a showroom and "all are for sale" if you have the dosh.

Thanks Maggie! I was a kid, and was mesmorized by the collection, and distinctly remember the ''Hitler'' car in it's own roped-off area. Hadn't thought about that car for years until I saw that Goering car recently posted....Goering had a huge collection of cars, and was curious. I don't have that kind of cash, even in my dreams!!!:p:D

I have no idea how many false Hitler's cars there might be in North America. At least from Finland two Mercedes-Benz 770's were sold to US and both have been exhibitioned as 'Hitler's cars'. The first one was in fact a 75-year birthday gift to our Field Marshal C.G.E. Manneriheim in 1941. The car was sold to Sweden in 1946 and then to US in 1948. There it became 'Hitler's car', and in 1973 it was sold at auction in Arizona for a record price of $153 000. The Finnish news office STT sent 13.1.1973 information around the world that the car was Mannerheim's and not Hitler's but this fact was neglected.

The other 'Finnish' Grosser Mercedes was bought to Finland a long time after the war by the famous collector Aulis Pakula. This car was was originally owned by the Krupp family (not Hitler!), and after long negotiations they agreed to sell the car to Finland. It was totally restored by skillful people but unfortunately Mr. Pakula died in 1978 and after that the whole collection was sold around the world. The Krupp Mercedes 770 was sold to US where it was immediately exhibitioned as a 'Hitler's car' although this car wasn't even armored as Mannerheim's car had been.

If you want to have more information about these 'Finnish' Mercedes 770's, I'd suggest you to contact the first and best Finnish old cars' magazine Mobilisti by e-mail: toimitus(at)mobilisti.fi. I'm sure you'll find also other interesting features in www.mobilisti.fi although the language may be difficult at the beginning. But don't worry, even I learnt to speak it after about two of years of practicing, without any courses, and after four years I started to read and write Finnish.

You are right, so right. Chances are it was for a movie or commerical shoot.

One interesting thing now is that modern cars don't leak oil anywhere near as much as this.

It wasn't a "leak." It was the road draft tubes. They went away with the advent of PCV's.
