I've spent the day viewing WWI photos, and I have to pass
this one along, originally published in National Geographic.
Taken in northern France at an orphanage in 1917 by an un-
known U.S. photographer, it shows youngsters whose fathers
died in Flanders fields. Some of these little girls were just
toddlers here. Though most are surely dead by now, one
wonders what sort of life these war orphans lived, eh?

  2. As they became adults, they probably already thought they'd been through Hell. Little did they know what their "neighbors" were soon to put them through.

I wonder if it could be a contraption used to test and adjust the transmission bands on model Ts?

Lewis, I think you need to go back and read the rules of HAMB membership, as I think your language is over the line. It's still a free country, and you can say what you please, up to a point. And it doesn't mean I have to honor, nor share, your position.

If Dog 427 -- who started one of the best threads on the HAMB -- or a HAMB moderator, or any poster or visitor on this site, other than you, objects to anything I post, I'll be happy to pull it immediately. But as Mazooma said before, nobody can please everybody, and anyone can easily scan past things that don't interest them, and they're sure to find something else that does. Try it, it works.

And no need to worry, as there are plenty more WWI pix -- tanks, planes, ships, soldiers and civilians during a rough time in history. Why would WWI be pertinent? Because it was the first war in which mechanization played such an impactful role, which -- in just four years -- helped aeronautics make a giant forward step, which ramped up the need for improved roads and highways, led to medical advancement, and so on.

This has been a very eclectic thread, visually portraying many decades of society -- worldwide. Its a big tapestry, into which our beloved cars, trucks, motorcycles, etc., fit as a key element. One might see a line of beauty-contest contestants, kids with ice-cream cones, juxtaposed with pix of '20s gow jobs, Jack Benny's Maxwell, or Hispano- Suizas and Studebakers. It's a smorgasbord with something for everybody. Ever notice, you're the only one finding fault? Most everyone else is constructive, humorous, inquisitive, etc. The discussion of posted photos is one of the things that make any thread great.

Thanks, Dog, for getting the ball rolling last December. Look at all those posts and over a million views! As I say often, God bless the HAMB!

Flanders Field, 1917. Hard to believe one could
keep a stiff upper lip under such crappy conditions.

A tank for the Western Front. Anybody recognize the truck???

A light-hearted postcard from early in the war, when the conflict
was expected to last only months. Anybody speak French?

A "rough go" made for men of iron.

jimi'shemi291......totally agree with you, post number 11203. A self-appointed moderator should remember to keep his opinion to himself. I've been viewing this thread from the beginniing and I have noticed that some do not appreciate the depth of the thread.
That aside, the use profanity belongs in the bar or poolroom.
Keep posting photos, It's all good to one degree or another.
