  13. From the Tim Flock site....
There wasn't a Hudson Motor Company when the NEXTEL CUP came into being and Nextel wasn't happening in 1952, in fact nextel didn't come into being until 1993. That b.s. is just nascar talk for the lamebrains that think that way.

However, Tim Flock did win the only NASCAR race ever held at South Bends Playland Park.

Fair enough. However, the link was posted in response to #11475. "Tim & his winning Mercedes, NASCAR sports car race, June 1955, Raleigh, NC". :)

Nextel....Winston Cup......Hmm, seems like I remember Grand National. I have an FIA license issued by NASCAR in 1972. Pretty sure it states "GN". I'll look at it tomorrow.
    Is my memory failing?

I had a Grand National drivers club jacket at one time, (garage sale) so maybe Grand National is correct, hmmmm,, memory is one thing I'm short on,:confused::p:D:D:eek:

  18. In 1949, NASCAR introduced the Strictly Stock division, after sanctioning Modified and Roadster division races in 1948. The first NASCAR "Strictly Stock" race ever was held at Charlotte Speedway on June 19, 1949. The division was renamed to "Grand National" for the 1950 season, reflecting NASCAR's intent to make its part of the sport more professional and more prestigious. It would retain this name until 1971. In 1972 the Winston Cup Series was introduced and ran until 2003. In 2004 the NEXTEL Cup was the next sponsor of the series but due to the merger with Sprint in 2005, the series was renamed the Sprint Cup for the 2008 season. .

  19. They were still called "Grand National cars' until the mid- 80's. Nationwide cars were called "sportsmen". It took a while to get used to calling them "Winston Cup", and then they had to go and change the name so many times.

I just call them "Cup cars" now.
