Never got to watch racing at Portland Speedway in the early years but I was there for the last asphalt race, around 2000. Saw Herschel McGriff put the first jackhammer in to start the demolision prior to converting back to asphalt which IIRC did not last long.

I don't know his exact history timeline but he drove this Roland Leong rail...

and he also drove this car after McEwan,Adams and Fuller sold it and it became "The Mangler".

I went to the old Military School on Signal Hill back in the 60s and one of the other guys trapped there was Mickey Thompson's nephew. This was around the time Ongias drove for Thompson so I remember him a little bit.
Other than that, I got nothing.

    Hey FT,
Thanks for the information/photos. I think it was earlier than those photos. I lived about a mile away from MT's shop and I must have driven by that school on Cherry Ave. a million times. I was always impressed with that howitzer out in front. If my recollection is somewhat accurate, the chassis was a very low slung dragster. I believe it was an injected chevy motor. It looked like a chassis research style, but pulled back and low.
    Thanks,
    Jnaki

I believe the last pic is none other than Mayberry's own Floyd the Barber!

Swi, those car surfing gals were pretty scantily clad for 1923.

  18. Cybill Shepherd, indeed. She looked good in Taxi Driver (1976), one of my favorite movies. But she aged not that good in the last few years, in my opinion.

66? OMG! She does look like, like, bad for that age. Dang!!! I'm glad I didn't go to prom with her when she asked. :)

You will get old too, my friend. It's a fact of life. "Time is the fire in which we burn" You will look in the mirror on day and wonder what happened. Then you will know how pointless it is to criticize people for aging.
