Vintage shots from days gone by!

  1. Likley it's STILL an airstrip. Did you know Madras was a WW2 emergency runway long before the drags. In the 60's it was still two miles long!
    Thawed out yet, or still festooned with snow?

    When I was a kid living in the Willamette Valley, I had a friend who's cousin raced sports cars, around 1966 they took me to an SCCA race that was being held at the Newport airport. One of the highlights was when they stopped the race and moved the hay bales off the track to let a big plane land and I remember standing on the side of the straight stretch with the plane going by us.

  3. McMinneville "Drag Strip" was really the McMinneville airport. Pretty common back in those days!

    @Marty Strode will probably know for sure but I think that was the case with Scappoose and Aurora too.

  17. Eww....why did those T-Birds have to all come in that color? My brother and I received one each as a kid and they were both that pea soup green. Blech!

  19. Rolla Vollstedt's 1965 Indy car was based heavily on the 1963-64 car, even using its chassis jig, but was designed for the newly-available Ford quad-cam engine. Len Sutton would drive the new car at the Indy 500.
    For a car built by two men in a basement shop in Oregon, with a frame design that was based heavily on a set of photographs of the 1961 Cooper, the 1965 Vollstedt was a quite remarkably professional and highly effective car. The front suspension had fabricated upper A-arms with inboard springs and shock absorbers, while the rear had outboard springs and a single torsion bar. The rear uprights were cast magnesium. Harold Sperb, evidently a master fabricator, had welded the frame, and also fabricated the fuel tanks and all the bodywork. Jim Robbins funded the purchase of the engine, and Bryant Heating continued their sponsorship arrangement. Despite the car having not even started its engine until arriving in its Indianapolis garage, Sutton qualified 12th and, despite a long pit stop to clean out the fuel nozzles, finished in the same position. The car raced on for many years, including a spell in Supermodifieds with a young Tom Sneva behind the wheel. It was later immaculately restored by Vollstedt and is currently on display at the World of Speed Museum in Oregon, just 20 miles from its birthplace.
