CPI Inflation Calculator shows that $1275 in 1942 is equal to $18,773.55 in 2016.

That's interesting...thanks for calculating! I would imagine that $18,773.55 in 1942, with all the rationing going on starting up so quickly in early 42'....was a REALLY big amount of money...rubber, tin, brass and metal, etc..etc....for the war effort....when an average house cost $7,000 and a new Ford was $1,100 in 1942.........wow!

"Terms If You Desire". On $29.95. I wonder what the terms were and if they charged any interest.

My parents paid $1067.30 for a new Chevy in Dec. 1942. I have the receipt.

I'm betting the first picture with the Stutz was taken in Zimmerman's Antique car museum.

    Hello,

This scene looked exactly like our episode with my dad driving about 150 miles south of the Mexican border along the Baja Coastline. We were going to a fishing camp along the beach and had to take the main road south from Ensenada. After driving for quite a while in the hot sun, my dad’s direction was south, then look for a dirt road going to the beach. What? All dirt roads from the main highway south go to the beach… but he kept insisting that he will know which road it is.

We were running low on apples, chips, and drinks and it was hot. Finally, on a sloping dirt road leading to the ocean through some coastal mountains, my mother saw some water just as my dad had turned a blind, right curve leading down hill. She yelled, “the beach” and started to tell us to quit leaning out of the window of the big 52 Buick sedan. My dad was surprised at the yelling and commotion from the back seat. He turned around the blind corner and the right front wheel dropped into a drainage ditch. The rear followed suit and dropped slightly on the deep shoulder dirt.

My mom’s head hit the door jam when her side dropped down and we were thrown to the right side rear door. My dad got spooked at my mom’s surprise yelling and went into a panic mode. Now, the whole Buick was stuck. Where were we? It looked to be many miles to the ocean and we could see a camp of sorts. But, they were very tiny. Meaning, it was a long walk for our family. So, my dad had the idea of putting rocks under the right side tires and sent the two boys out to search for small 8 inch size rocks. My mom was very quiet and sat in the shade, inside the car. My dad was digging the dirt out from below the tires with a broken 2x4 and the tire iron.

Finally after many failed attempts to get the car moving, my dad said he was going to walk down to that distant, what ever we all saw down by the beach. So, he took a canteen full of water, an apple and his hat to start his walk. He told the two boys to watch out for snakes and keep our mom calm.

As he disappeared down that long road to the beach, we fell asleep in the hot sun. It was 4-5 hours later that we saw a beat up old truck coming up the trail with a cloud of dust behind it. In about another 50 minutes, the old truck was near us and stopped in front of our car. My mom was waving a beach towel to call for help. Out pops my dad from the passenger side and 5 men jumped out of the back of the truck bed.

They proceeded to dig a big hole with shovels and stuff those rocks we found under the tires. Then they hooked up the fat ropes to the truck and the big Buick. After several more tries and another 30 minutes of pulling and pushing, out pops the Buick onto the down hill road, free and clear of that nasty ditch on the side of the road.

By this time, my dad had given those men a ton of money, all the beer in the cooler, all of the sandwiches my mom had made during this time waiting, plus more. He was very grateful that we were no longer stranded.

Did we get to the beach fishing camp? No, that long dirt road was the wrong one selected by my dad. So, we turned around and drove another 90 miles north (in silence) back to the Bahia Hotel in Ensenada for the next several days to relax. The 65 year old incident was never spoken about in our family , except between the two boys, who thought it was a very cool adventure in Baja. We always laughed about it when we were older and reminiscing.
