So MrFire, those pics must be when we were expecting or getting ready in case, we were attacked by an atom/hydrogen bomb back in the 50's?

They probably were stocked with crackers, water and first aid equipment and maybe tents, cots, etc........
As if that would have done any good...
If the blast didn't kill you, the radiation poisoning would. The blast would be a much better way to "go" rather than watch your family members die one at a time within days.
I've seen a nuclear bomb explosion and even from many miles away, the effects are unlike anything your imagination can conger.
One nuclear bomb can contain the same amount of explosive power of all of the bombs detonated during all of Word War II COMBINED.

the family went on vacation and there was all this talk about a bomb going off at 11 PM on the horizon....so we sat on the beach on Oahu and these photos are what I saw...this was three months before the Cuban Missile Crisis where we came damn close to a nuclear war with the Soviets, so it was a crappy time to be 11....I never thought I'd live long enough to get a driver's license...

this was one of the last nuclear bombs detonated in space...all future testing would go on underground.

Crazy, never knew we we're that close to war until I got older, sure glad we all made it through that crisis,,
The closest I ever got was watchin them handling huge silver bombs on the hangar deck in the navy, guarded by several well armed marines.. I remember the call on the loudspeakers,, now chop sticks chop sticks, all hands man your chop sticks stations.. you knew then to get out of the way..

re: post #12934 Starfish Prime: On July 9, 1962, a high-altitude nuclear test named Starfish Prime was conducted by the United States military above Johnston Island in the Pacific Ocean. Its unexpected electromagnetic pulse (EMP) effects caused disruptions in electrical systems and equipment in Honolulu 700 miles away.
The EMP shut down long-distance telephone calls and disabled three satellites in low earth orbit. Radiation resulting from the test later destroyed a total of seven satellites by knocking out their solar arrays or electronics.
Quoting Cecil R. Coale, PhD , who observed the flash from Canton Island:
“Then a brilliant white flash erased the darkness like a photoflash. Then the entire sky turned light green for about a second. In several more seconds, a deep red aurora, several moon diameters in size, formed where the blast had been. A white plasma jet came slowly out of the top of the red aurora (over Johnston Island) and painted a white stripe across the sky from north to south in about one minute. A deep red aurora appeared over Samoa at the south end of the white plasma jet. This visual display lasted for perhaps ten minutes before slowly fading. There was no sound at all.”

As spectacular as the sight was, it was the invisible features of the blast that were the most impressive. Not only was the sky illuminated, but in Hawaii alone 300 street lights failed, TV and radios malfunctioned, burglar alarms went off, and several power lines fused. In low Earth orbit 3 satellites were immediately disabled, and some artificial radiation bands were created that eventually disabled 1/3 of the low orbit satellites in orbit.
