Vintage shots from days gone by!

This is Everett Saylor driving the Bowles Offy in the 1941 Indianapolis 500. Amazingly, the car's owner, Dr. Mark Bowles is still very much alive and well into his nineties. Before everyone gets excited note that there were two Dr. Bowles. The first Dr. Mark Bowles was a Cincinnati physician and business man who was involved in racing. However, by 1941 he was having business issues and apparently being sued with some big numbers being thrown around. So this race car was bought and put into the ownership of his son of the same name. The son also became Dr. Mark Bowles PhD and ultimately taught nuclear engineering at Princeton. In addition the son Bowles continued his involvement in racing owning many prominent and successful big cars well into the 1950s. He was an officer in the Central States Racing Association and also operated Winchester Speedway for several years.

At any rate the last I heard he is still active and can be seen at vintage events showing his Kurtis roadster. Dr. Bowles just about has to be the oldest living Indianapolis 500 car owner and certainly must be the only one from before WWII.

 

Met my late wife there in 1969, the last year for the modifieds. Sold at auction in 1973.

 

How much did you get for her?

 

Nope, I was born in '56.

My folks told me about it though, mom moved into Lakewood in '47.

Still lots of dairy's around when I was growing up though. In fact there was one across the street from my high school.

Johnny was killed changing the tire on this Midget by an out of control Midget driven by "dynamite"
