My dad was on another DE in back then, the USS O'Brien DE-421 (corrected, not a Fletcher class - I was all screwed up on that and my sister saved the day). He's gone now but was all over the Pacific on it in some big battles I think. I was on a few carriers myself, and I can remember the small boys on bad days. One minute all you could see was the top of a mast, the next they'd shoot up out of the water like corks. Then they'd dissappear again behind or thru the next wave and start the whole process over. Never did figure how those guys ate on days like that, all the while in a harness strapped to a cable, or tied to their racks. Gary

Chicago's Biograph Theater where July 22, 1934, mad-dog killer and bank
robber John Dillinger was staked out by FBI agents and die in a hail of
bullets, trying yet another getaway. Dillinger's blood-thirsty cohort, Baby
Face Nelson (aka Lester Gillis), again engaged the FBI in a gun battle,
November 27. He killed two of the same special agents who had staked
out Dillinger, Cowley and Hollis, before himself being mortally wounded.

In just 11 months, from September 1933 until July 1934, Dillinger and his
violent gang robbed police arsenals of tommy guns, rifles, handguns, ammo
and bulletproof vests, then proceeded to terrorize the Midwest. Besides
knocking over banks for many thousands of dollars, the Dillinger gang
killed 10 men, wounded seven more and pulled off three jail breaks.

Attendees at the "funeral" of Pretty Boy Floyd, thanks to the files of the FBI.

In the darkest days of the Great De-
pression, 1932 to 1934, some
turned to violent crime to get the
dough they felt law-abiding pursuits
denied them. Charles "Pretty Boy"
Floyd was named Public Enemy #1
after FBI agents whacked John Dillin-
ger in Chicago. Floyd was pegged
for the deaths of 10 men, before the
l aw finally cornered him by a barn
near East Liverpool, Ohio, in late fall.
His funeral was "attended" by about
5,000 people, mostly just curiosity
seekers bored with day-to-day life.
He'd even run with Dillinger for awhile.
The police photo of him in the mortuary
shows one of the bullet wounds that
killed him. His "apprehension" was not
helped much by musician Woody Guthrie
dedicating a piece of his folk lore to
Floyd, depicting him as a sort of Robin
Hood.​

This man brimming with pride is James Wesley Robinson. In the 50's he was the first black man to join Phoenix Fire Department. He was also my fathers Captain and fishing buddy. My dad has a story that may go with that actual Ladder One behind him in the pic. As they were leaving on a call, the shifter broke a few inches from the transmission as my dad was driving and he had to go the whole way there using just the stub to shift. When they got back, one of the guys crammed a complete hollow aluminum handled string mop on it to finish the day.

We got some of this last night...

 

Upon reaching the Rhein River in '44, Gen. Patton
had his pic taken after taking a big whizz in it, just
as did every other allied soldier! How's THAT for PR???

It's snowing Plymouths and Fords in Vermont.

 

It was called the Winton Flyer, and was actually created for the movie by Von Dutch.
McQyeen kept it for awhile, buytt later sold at auction.
