The ship wreck of the prize-winning, full-rigged steel ship
Glenesslin, October 1, 1913. The fast Liverpool-built beauty
met her end on rocks at the foot of 1600-foot Mount Neah-
kahnie on the Oregon Coast. A protracted legal investiga-
tion was unable to prove the crew wrecked the ship for its
insurance value. But it was well known that steam shipping
had already spelled doom for the age of the full-rigged ship.
This photo is believed to have been taken by either Dr. Tho-
mas Monk or his wife. However, captain and crew carried
permanent marks thereafter upon their career records!!!

Although Harris Ranch is still a good place to get a $200 hamberger (used to be called "the $100 hamberger" but avgas is $5 a gallon now:mad:) this is "the Nut Tree" in Vacaville CA.

Rode The Cog last year. A bit expensive, but I think it's worth it. What a great piece of Americana. Neat little museum, too.

...and you never know where things will lead, like this Mercer which still does not have enough width for your foot to be "inside" the car (some things didn't change!). Both are way cool, then and now.

  18. The Glennessen was wrecked at the base of Neahkhanee Mountain, Oregon on a bright, sunny, perfect weather day. Onlookers watched as she sailed straight into the rocks for no appparent reason! This is also the site of alleged buried Spanish treasure. Artifacts dating back to the 1600's have been found there!

The Mount Lowe Incline Railway.....this railroad was located above Pasadena-Altadena area of Southern California...last run was 1937. The rails were pulled up during World War II to be melted down. The incline railroad was patched into the Pacific Electric trolley system in the greater Los Angeles area.
It was an engineering marvel, opening in the 1890's.

Nobody loved drag racing and it's people like C.J. "Pappy" Hart who managed drag strips, most notably the legendary Lions Drag Strip in Wilmington, California

"Man and the Motor Car" 1949

A little backstory: When I was a young lad in the early 60's, I went to work with my Dad one summer day. He was cleaning out some discarded textbooks from the attic of the school where he worked, and among them I found this Driver Education textbook from 1949. He let me take it home, and it became one of my prized possessions.

The recent thread asking about the books on your bookshelf prompted me to dig it out and scan some of the illustrations that entertained me as a youngster.

I even found my new avatar among them.
