Vancouver, Washington is just across the river from Portland. It gives people a great view of Portland and the Columbia river flowing toward the ocean. Crossing all of the bridges from Portland gets you into Vancouver. The river walk down from the I-5 Interstate Bridge gives some of the best views of the whole waterfront along Portland. Just south of downtown Vancouver, Washington, about a block from the Columbia River, lies some great art work in the most inconspicuous place.

WOOLWORTH’S CLOSED IN THE 80’S due to competition and rising costs. These stores were the mainstays in cities all over the USA. In our downtown, (Long Beach) shopping and dining in the store at 4th and Pine Ave. was a fun experience. Taking the bus from our house to the downtown area, shopping, then the bus ride home…all good memories. Our parents’ weekly excuse to get out of the house was to drive to the downtown area for shopping and to look at the huge, new buildings.

This downtown area was the place to shop, before the big outdoor malls were built. My dad made it a weekly outing to shop at his favorite store, Buffum’s Department Store, which is just a couple of blocks down the street, towards the ocean. The Kress Company Store (all over the USA)was the primary competitor to Woolworth's until 1960.

The Kress (5-10-25 cents) Store has now become the Kress Lofts.

We used to cruise down the Pine avenue during the Xmas season to see the whole street lit up with lights and decorations all the way down to the ocean. The high school cruising scene brought many hot rods and cruisers down this main drag to see the street and buildings all lit up while driving towards the ocean.

Just over town from where I now live and has it changed!

 

A.J. Watson looks over one of the last 8 roadsters that came out of his shop for the 1963 Indianapolis 500. This one was sold to Racing Associates for Ebb Rose to drive. Engine wizard Herb Porter was the chief mechanic and in the photo you can see that he has experimental items like an electronic ignition, angled fuel injection, a modified cooling system, and the latest magnesium cam boxes on the engine. It looks like the front timing gear covers on the engine are all magnesium as well. Ebb got bumped in this car but still made the race in another 1963 Watson that his buddy A.J. Foyt had turned down in order to run his 1961 Trevis. Subtle changes had been made to the run of 1963 Watsons and for whatever reason none of them handled very well. The Foyt car was redesigned and rebuilt by Eddie Kuzma and ended up winning the 1964 500. Notice the grain scales in the background which were used for measuring corner weights.

The second photo shows master mechanic Johnny Capels at Terre Haute driving the ex-ECCA sprint car that by this time was owned by Al Unser. For all of his skills as a mechanic and later as an executive with both CART and USAC everyone today seems to forget that Capels was a pretty good race driver as well.

It's a Mini for sure - There's no Renault look like that.

 

Didn't Watson end up restoring this car for a guy in New York before his death, or am I thinking of another car ?
