Rootie, any info on this one? I was thinking jalopy race but the car isn't stripped much, plus it's a four-door rather than a coupe. Then I thought maybe demo derby, but all the glass is intact. ???

Actually, it's a oval track stock car from the late 40s-early50s and looks to be at Oakland Stadium. Back then stock meant EXACTLY that!

  10. I'd say the so called cougar is actually the very classy Dinah Shore. See the USA in a Chevrolet... To me, the youngster looks more like Mickey Thompson.

Yes, you are correct. Plus, Burt Reynolds would have been 19 when this photo was taken. Dinah was married to actor George Montgomery at that time. She was a great woman and hardly a "cougar."

From RedlandMaggie's previous post... (the reply tab does not work)

    Hello,

Back in the late 30’s, 40’s and into the 50’s, my mom and dad lived in Boyle Heights which is right near this offramp in the old 50’s photo. The huge building complex in the background is the LA COUNTY GENERAL HOSPITAL or today it is known as the Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center.

We had visited friends and relatives here, many times, over the years. My dad was here in 1972 for a severe illness. Every time we drove by this freeway spot on our travels to Northern California, this hospital is a reminder of all of the years of service to the community, near and far.
    Jnaki

Los Angeles County+USC Medical Center, also known as County/USC, by the abbreviation LAC+USC, or by the name Los Angeles County General, is a 600-bed public teaching hospital located at 2051 Marengo Street in the Boyle Heightsneighborhood of Los Angeles, California. It is jointly operated by Los Angeles County Department of Health Services and the University of Southern California. Los Angeles County+USC Medical Center is one of the largest public hospitals and medical training centers in the United States, and the largest single provider of healthcare in Los Angeles County.
    In Popular Culture:

    · Marilyn Monroe was born in the charity ward on June 1, 1926. The hospital also has a jail ward. In 1954, Stan Getz was processed in the jail ward as his wife gave birth to their third child one floor below. He had been arrested for attempting to rob a pharmacy to get a morphine fix.

    · The 1962 film The Interns starring Cliff Robertson was filmed in and around the hospital.

    · The hospital was featured briefly in the 1953 version of The War Of The Worlds directed by Byron Haskins in scenes depicting the evacuation of Los Angeles from the oncoming Martians.

    · The distinct Art Deco-style main building served as the exterior of the hospital in the 1998 movie City of Angels. In Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, the episode entitled "The Good Wound", exterior shots of the older LAC+USC facility to represent the hospital where Riley was being held.

    · Beginning in 1975, the ABC soap opera General Hospital began using the facility for its exterior shots, appearing primarily in the show's opening sequence, where it still remains. The lower 'floors' of the show's Los Angeles studio (as with most television series, the show's one-floor set with several smaller floor sets features a dummy elevator to maintain the illusion of a several-floor set) are modeled after the actual hospital's emergency room entrance, allowing for the show to shoot outdoor scenes in their own parking lot.

  18. Scotty Dryden’s service station and store was a popular landmark at the intersection of highways 19 and 26 in Picture Gorge, about six miles west of Dayville. According to some, the spot was so precarious, that when flushing the restroom’s toilet, you could see the John Day River below. The structure was damaged in the flood of 1964, and burned later that year.
