He's definitely running a bit too much clearance on those blower lobes in that photo.

1960's cars in front of Buffum's Marina and side of Hof's Hut (upper left)

    Hello,

Back in the 60’s, this corner spot in Southeast Long Beach, Belmont Shore area was “the” spot. The corner of 2nd Street and PCH had the most traffic of this Southern/Eastern border area of Long Beach and Seal Beach. Before the big freeways, if you were cruising South to Seal Beach/Huntington Beach on PCH…you had to go through this intersection. The 28 year old Belmont Shore Car Show is displayed, just west of this famous corner.

It was oil derricks to the East, barren recycled land to the Southeast that used to be a certified household dumping ground center in the 50’s. The big marina resort and marina to the Southwest and the famous Hof’s Hut Marina Restaurant and Buffum’s on the Northwest.Architect, HUGH GIBBS, designed building for Buffum’s Department Store chain was in this current drug store location:

In the early cruising days, this parking lot was full of hot rods and cruisers, as it was the last big restaurant before going east or south to Orange County and the beaches. Saturday mornings was the cruising/meeting spot before heading out for a day’s drive.

Today, it is the cornerstone of an outdoor mall and a giant shopping center across the intersection. It is still the gateway east to Orange County and south to Seal Beach. The last northeast corner has a local favorite, an “In and Out Burger” building. The huge, hotel resort across the street with nightly entertainment was another hot spot from 1963 onward, but last week, the whole resort was finally torn down.

(The two Super Bowl #1 teams for 1967 were housed there. Plus, Elvis Presley stayed there in 1972) The Buffum’s building is now a drug store while the old Hof’s Hut marina restaurant is another chain restaurant.

The famous, Long Beach Alamitos Bay Marina, is just a stone’s throw away. (home to the 1964 and 1984 Olympic Sailing practice, storage areas. In 1984, the Sailing Competition home port.)

The barren landfill stayed empty after closing until 1977, when the Marketplace Shopping Center began developing.
