And Charlie Steinegger third from the left. He was injured in a cackling incident at the 2006 NHRR and died later that year. His death wasn't totally due to the accident, but added to it I was told.

Thanks for this photo, Maggie! That's the old state prison far, far back on the right... You can see the guard turrets rising above the walls. Main-Street-in-1950s-Deer-Lodge-Montana-12399050164-700x435.jpg

When I was just a kid (1959) There was a riot at the prison.. The whole town was afraid of what might happen. Here's an account from the paper....

The Montana State Prison operated with a "con boss" system in which certain prisoners ran industries within the prison, which gave them terrific power. Then in 1959, a new reform-minded warden from Wisconsin, Floyd Powell broke up the hierarchy.

Powell aimed to "change this reputed hellhole into a model institution that would be the envy of every prison in America."

A career criminal who'd spent time in Alcatraz and an unseated "con boss," Jerry Myles had been in prison for about 25 of his 45 years. More interested in gaining power in prison than in living outside the walls, Myles stalked young men for sex, earned the nickname "Little Hitler" for his remorseless domination of the prison and "had he not been a psychopath, he might have been a scholar," Giles wrote.

Myles carefully planned the riot and his escape. Another prisoner tossed gasoline on a guard, and Myles lit a torch made from a mop and thrust it at the drenched guard, who surrendered his key and rifle. He was taken prisoner, along with, eventually, 25 others.

Rifles "were the pivots of power. Held by the guards, they meant authority. Held by the cons, they meant revolt," Giles wrote.

Inmates ambushed other guards and then took over a second cell block and the ammunition stored there. Slashed with a cleaver and shot, Deputy Warren Ted Rothe was murdered in the uprising.

All told, the prison was under inmate control for 36 hours, drawing international media attention, until National Guard troops stormed the prison. The murder-suicide of Myles and accomplice Lee Smart ended the riot.

A few months later, the prison was damaged in an earthquake. Most Montanans thought an overcrowded, semi-unplumbed, underfunded prison was more in line with the punishment aspect of prison, and efforts to open a new prison failed until the late 1970s.
