  1. A few more of Baker Oregon. After the gold rush most folks left and cattle and logging took over. Cowboys still drive the heards up and down the main roads in and around that area today. If you run into heard on the roads we call that a cow jam. And yes, they have the right of way.

I don't know the driver in the first attached photo but it's a great shot. I guess they had window trays and drive in restaurants with curb service even then.

And I'm just guessing on the last shot but that almost looks like Wilbur Shaw being towed in at Legion Ascot. Of course, he could also having the rope attached to the front axle to be tow started as well.

    Thanks for posting, Rootie!

  4. I did - I love history and there sure is plenty out that way. We took the kids when they were little and saw the Sumpter dredge, hit all the museums, rode the Sumpter Railway, toured what was left of a few ghost towns. years later I drove a number of Pendleton grade schoolers on the school bus and did the same thing. Walked around Baker City a lot waiting for high school games and swim meets to finish.

Thanks Rootie for all the great posts. Second picture is Roger Ward in Ken Brenn's Offy. Ward has just won the Formula Libre race @ Lime Rock Park 1959. Beating all the big boys on a Sports car track. Very famous race.

The first attached photo shows Denver local Keith Andrews after winning the 1954 Pikes Peak Hill Climb. Another driver who showed talent but wasn't really lucky in the end.

The second photo shows Mario Andretti's Overseas Nationals Airways dirt car on the trailer in 1968. Racing was a lot simpler then.

Third attached photo shows mechanic Harry Stephens with the Walsh 9 dirt car. Both Johnnie Parsons and Spider Webb drove this car in 1955 but the car missed the 500 that year. Harry Stephens won the 500 with Parsons in 1950.

The last photo shows the Chapman crew setting corner weights with driver Dick Rathmann in the cockpit in 1963. Everyone must have used the same grain scales because you see old photos of them with just about every car using them both inside and outside of the garages. I guess no one worried much about leveling the scales to each other back then and just used them on whatever surface that was available whether it was level or not.
