The first attached photo looks like someone's sharp looking CAE supermodified at one of the winter time shows. To this day I'm not sure that anyone ever sold more sprints/supers than Jim Culbert. He was way ahead of his time.

The second photo shows the record setting Novi team at the 1946 Indianapolis 500. The driver is Ralph Hepburn. Owner Lou Welch is at the right front tire and a dirty looking Bud Winfield is just behind. And Radio Gardner is on the left rear. It's funny but even the Novi crew members became pretty well known in their own right. I think Jean Marcenac joined up a year after this photo and still later the Granatelli's took over. Andy Granatelli is, of course, known for his turbines but just as many people remember him for the Novi engine as well. There still seems to be a lot of interest in the Novi today; often from people that weren't even born when they ran.

And notice the hand crank in the side of the car. The Novis usually had pneumatic starters to fire things up. I think it would be pretty tough to hand crank one fast enough to start it; at least when the engine was cold. Maybe the hand crank worked after everything was warmed up. It's in the photo so it obviously must have been used.

:D Do you suppose that hand crank just might have been for an inertia type starter such as was used on aircraft?
    Good luck.Have fun.Be safe.
