Actually it was a 1939 Lagonda LeMans with a Chrysler 331 hemi. Prior to the 331 it had a flathead Ford. John Fitch, Sherwood Johnston, Erwin Goldschmidt, and a few others raced this in SCCA events from about 1950-54. (originally this was the 1939 Lagonda team car used at LeMans... but with the V-12). Believe it or not... it ran pretty well during that 1950-54 period with the American engines.

I don't get it. Those are the correct plates for the car.

I have always heard rumors of Hoover wearing dresses but I found that very hard to believe until I came across this photo at a flea market. Wow. . . you never know !

I'm sure that these pictures are all doctored - even the station wagons are 2 doors.

  16. I'd think a 58 car would need a 58 sticker..... or newer.

The yellow plates came out in '56 and lasted until they were replaced with the black plates in '63. They have "56" stamped into the metal of the plate. The renewal stickers go on the rear plates only. All CA cars with the yellow plates look just like this one from the front. The switch from the yellow to the black plates in '63 was the last time plates were actually discarded when the new ones went on the cars. When the blue plates and other designs since then came out, the black ones and all others continued to be valid as long as the current stickers were on the rear. Hence, there are still 60's cars with their original black plates driving around.

Talk about politically incorrect today? Dang this would have been fun! Shoots cats with real ping pong balls
    [IMG]

These were available in pedal and electric versions. And would have buried your Tonka trucks

And if you seriously wanted to play firefighter this puppy was electric powered and even carried is own water supply to hose down the neighborhood girls. It even had a place on the back for your best buddy or your dog to stand while you drove to the nearest emergency.

No way; I'm sure that's Rosie

Gary, you ma be right. This rider isn't running his mouth enough, so it can't be Meatloaf. Gotta be somebody else.

I always enjoyed her in the show "the Roaring Twenties" where she played a flapper.Pretty hot stuff for a 11 year old in those days!I watched "The Great Race" the other night and had forgot she had a nice part in the movie. We lost both her and Tony Curtis this year.I miss those great actors from my past.Sadly i don't see them being replaced by most of the new crop of actors.

The builder, this guy, was shot and killed. The bike still exists, has an Olds engine.

  24. Though I would not build or own anything like this, I would love to have the opportunity to look at it up close to appreciate the ingenuity that goes into making something so outlandish. You have to wonder if the guy thought of it as a joke or a serious, usable vehicle.

This train is named 'Best Friend' and was the first passenger train operated in South Carolina. It ran from Charleston to Branchville to other points in the state in the 1830s. It is owned by Southern Railways and is kept in a specially built warehouse with a glass front in Charleston, S C. I know this because my dad used to maintain it for the railroad in the seventies. There is a special built rail car to haul it and the railroad used to take it around the country for exhibitions. That stopped in the late 80s or early 90s and now it just sits in it's warehouse on display for tourists.
I have some pictures of it at my dad's shop being repaired somewhere. I'll try and find them and see if I can figure out how to post them.
