That's why I originally posted photos as smaller JPEGS that could be made larger by clicking. Then they can't go away because they aren't hosted. Few seem to do this so I didn't either.
If these photos were "hosted "50 years ago they wouldn't be here today.

"Now 'Fast forward' to 1955" says John, "and a Pickfords chain drive Scammell (a 100 tonner, I think?) hauls a 4-8-2 engine en route to Sudan Railways via the huge lifting capacity of the Finnieston crane. Check out the second man monitoring the trailer's progress. His identity is obscured by a cloth 'bunnet' - a hat very much de rigueur at this time and a forerunner of today's 'C U Jimmy' cap with its attendant ginger hair!
