Well, this 1908 shot (from the Los Angeles Library's photo collection) shows speedsters awaiting the starting gun at the original Ascot Park, one of the notable showplaces in that strip. Actually his horse's name was Tony, not Cement.... however, I like Cement better.

 

Wish I was a teenager again. Not a surplus of time or energy now.
