Seriously, though, FlatHeadGuy & SouthPaw, you are absolutely correct. Lots of us get too frisky at times and shoot off comments without thinking enough.

Yes, it's a freewheeling thread with lots of humor. I don't want that to change, 'cause the culture and decades we cover are pretty broad (and that covers many decades and changes in the culture, worldwide), but if we make a callous comment now and then, usually there's an honest apology. But a lot of stuff shown in the pix is pretty hilarious nowadays.

How's about we all get back to the thread and remember to be considerate? If I've offended anyone, I apologize. Let's move on, brothers and sisters. Common sense and courtesy (good words of yours) should be our guide.

Around here you could buy "white gas", which was no lead in the 60's. It was recommended for lawn mowers and tractors. Amoco high test was no lead too.

I don't know but it's got some duct work going into the rear of the body...

 

I forgot all about the white gas that dad bought for use in the camp stove and lantern,I should of said when they started pushing lead free gas for automotive use it was cheaper then leaded regular untill it was manditory for the 75 and up vehicles then it became more expensive by a few cents a gallon.

 

Looks like a gas generator. Burning wood or other combustible material to create a gas that works like natural gas.

A homemade (eigenbau) "alternate fuel" solution. I believe it burned coal. Might be incorrect about the fuel. Not sure of the technical details. I am sure someone will chime in with bettter information.

 

I do not believe it's a steam generator. That would likely be the death of the engine. I think that it is, as mentioned previously by NOTGETTINGRICH, a gas generator. Gasoline was unobtainable. Coal was hard to come by, but lots of wood. Studied a bit about all this when I was in school at Univ of Mich. If I had been a better student then I might remember the details.

 

Wood or coal gasification generator. Used in both WWI and WWII when petroleum fuels were scarce. If I am not mistaken the gas derived is Hydrogen.
