I don't know if anyone answered this or not. They were a big thing in the Bronx in the Fifthies, note the pompadors and DAs. I grew up with my cousin and his buddies who were 6-8 years older then I was. They had a gang of sorts. I hung out with them (in the summers) until I was 16 or so. Learned my love of hot rodding there also. Dressed like them, club jacket and all. Coming back to Long Island at the end of summer was always a shocker to kids my age. That's why I was able to hang out with the older guys and their rods.
