Rootie, where was / is this? Japan? Germany? This place sure puts new meaning to the term "out of the park" if you flip over the outside fence. Gary

Italy, (Milan?) a old Fiat factory IIRC. Don't think they ever had actual races there, it was more of a test track. Still exists, but today it's a hotel/resort type of place.

Cool 1944 Sonja Henie Royal Crown ad and vintage MoonPie tin sign are
on eBay, if anybody collects this type of thing. No commercial here, BUT
I borrowed these images, so I need to express thanks and attribution, folks!

Until today, I never knew that MoonPies and RC Cola are a famous
combination, especially in the South. But you learn something new
every day, right? Thankfully, the online site "Squidoo" had this
critical info, folks! Enquiring minds want to know!

Over nine out of 10 people have heard of the humble MoonPie, the snack supposedly invented for the Chattanooga Bakery, back when America was embroiled in WWI. Still owned and made by the same family, the MoonPie today comes in six flavors, but it's proof an idea doesn't have to be complex, or very novel for that matter, to generate success, even fame! At birth, the MoonPie was nothing more than two round graham-cracker layers, sandwiching a dollop of marshmallow and dipped in a chocolate coating. In the beginning, the MoonPie weighed a filling six or seven ounces! Today the ubiquitous but ever humble Moon Pie name is featured in two songs, has several annual festivals in its honor, and MoonPies are tossed from parade floats. Don't forget the annual MoonPie Eating Contest in Bessemer, AL (record: 38 of the two-ounce snacks in eight minutes by a lady known as "The Black Widow"!).

Seems to me, how the MoonPie got its odd name is already shrouded in mystery -- befitting a legend, eh? One account has it that Chattanooga Bakery field rep and distributor Earl Mitchell, Sr., asked miners at a coal-company store what would make a good, filling snack, handy enough to be carried to work with them in their lunch buckets. Mitchell already knew miners steadily bought graham crackers and marshmallow cream, so it wasn't hard to envision an individual-sized snack "pie." But he asked one miner HOW BIG it should be. Legend has it, the moon was rising in the evening sky, and the miner held up his hands and framed the moon with his fingers. "About that big," the miner said. The rest is history . . . or is it? Another version of the story had Mitchell taking his little son (grandson?) to the bakery where the as-yet-unnamed pies were coming off the line. The cooling chocolate left little pockmarks in the coating, prompting the boy to observe excitedly that the snacks resembled the moon! Wa-lah! True or not, it's an entertaining yarn. LOL

HOW RC Cola and MoonPies teamed up seems to be a much bigger mystery! The pie was supposedly born in 1917, Royal Crown in 1934, for what it's worth. Some say the combo began in the early '50s, but there's no evidence this was any sort of planned marketing strategy. Anyway, it caught on in a flash and, for a while anyway, one could have a cold 16-ounce RC and a big, ol' MoonPie for only ten cents!

NRBQ, I think, did "RC Cola and a Moon Pie", it's almost a standard on some radio stations.

  27. Thanks "for the rest of the story" Doug! I owned several Fiat 600's when I was stationed with the Army in Bamberg, Germany in the early 70's. It's really cool to think those wonderful little cars came from this factory via the roof top test track!
