It certainly was Jimi Hendrix. Mickey Dolenz and Peter Tork saw Jimi play the Monterey pop festival and got him to join the Monkees tour. His stint on the tour was short lived, about seven performances, due to the fact Jimi's so called lewd act didn't go over well with the 10 to 14 year olds who had come to see the Monkees. It was said at the last appearance with the Monkkees show he smashed his guitar and flipped off the audience before leaving the stage and into a history of his own.
