Anybody know where I can find a higher resolution of this cover?

Yes I do, LN7. As I said, the original magazine is for sale on eBay. If I understand your intent, it's not about commercial use of a copyrighted work. Anyway, I don't think you can legally use the cover art without owning a copy of the magazine; and even then, you can't commercially market someone else's artwork and property.

All that said, if you just buy the magazine (by a famed artist, BTW), I would think you could have a large painting done for personal display in your home or garage. But, myself, I wouldn't dare sell a copy of a modern painting without obtaining permission. Basically, that's why Wikipedia points out that their representations of visuals/graphic-elements are lo-res.

I think you would probably be safest -- copyright-wise -- by buying a copy of the 1931 magazine.

The context of it would actually be a tribute that would not be sold, it would be as a gift from a car buddy/artist friend of mine to me with my personal 1931 Pontiac Sport Sedan as the car, he said pick out something I liked and I had seen this cover before and the other night it was on here so I figured I would ask.

I am always careful with copyright, I have to be or else I would be a hippocrate because I copyright my photos and art and other crap I make, the fact that you push that sort of thing makes me happy, so few give a damn about those out there who might be hurt by it, and those who are unaware of it.

Basically I am just looking for a better reference, as far as it goes he may not be anywhere near to this design, this guy is very passionate about art and cars.

 

I hear you, man. I sure don't want to come off as being a stickler. But folks need to be creful about it (as it can be a legal issue), and besides people deserve credit for their work. Good exchange. And good luck on finding a clearer copy of the MOTOR mag cover from the cool Art Deco era!

 

I was serving in northern Japan with the USAF Security Service as a voice intercept operator from June 1957 through June 1960, and I can attest that there was a LOT going on behind the scenes.

 

In reference to one of the photos in Post 22897, Paul Harvey was one of our biggest supporters while I was at Indianapolis Raceway Park, providing "official" cars and anything we needed. He also maintained his ties with old drag racers. Once he called me during the U.S. Nationals and said, "Gas Ronda is at the back gate and nobody knows who he is. Can you help?" Of course I could. On my way to the back gate I ran into Wally Parks and he wanted to know where I was going. I told him where and why, and he said, "Let's go take care of it. We can't forget those guys."

One of Wally's favorite sayings, and he used it often when they were organizing the museum, was, "If we don't remember where we've been, we can't know where we're going."

Seeing all the Monster Movie posters posted here lately reminded me of Sivad (Davis spelled backward) who hosted the 'Fantastic Features' show on WHBQ Memphis Saturday nights in the early 60's, one of 3 (!) TV stations available in my little town. Pretty neet stuff for a 10 year old. How can ya not like a Vampire with a southern accent?! But I wonder if there were other regional scarry guys out there.
