This is the 'Wreck of the Old 97' that so many sang about...
("The Wreck of the Old 97" was initially recorded by Virginia musicians G. B. Grayson and Henry Whitter).

The "Danville Bridge also known as the Stillhouse Trestle...

The 500 foot trestle was severely damaged as the locomotive, 2 mail cars, a baggage car and an express car vaulted off the Stillhouse Trestle.

The train plunged 75 feet into the rocky creek bed. Nine people were killed yet 7 survived.

About 100 yellow canaries fluttered in and about the wreckage, They gained freedom from six cages that had been in the baggage car.

The Engineer was trying to make up lost time and was doing an estimated 90 mph when he crested the grade. Approaching the bottom he realized he did not have enough air pressure to slow the train for the upcoming curved trestle, and in vain he reversed the engine to lock the wheels.

The Wreck of The Old 97
    by
    G. B. Grayson and Henry Whitter

Well they gave him his orders at Monroe, Virginia,
Said: "Steve, you're way behind time,
"This is not 38, this is Ol' 97,
"Put her into Spencer on time."

Then he turned around and said to his greasy fireman,
"Shovel on a little more coal.
"And when we cross that White Oak mountain,
    "Watch Ol' '97 roll."

And then a telegram come from Washington station,
    This is how it read:
"Oh that brave engineer that run ol 97,
"Is lyin in old Danville dead."

'Cos he was going down a grade making 90 miles an hour,
The whistle broke into a scream.
He was found in the wreck with his hand on the throttle,
Scalded to death by the steam.

Oh, now all you ladies you'd better take a warning,
From this time on and learn.
Never speak hard words to your true-lovin' husband.
He may leave you and never return.
    Poor Boy.

GB Grayson, who was blinded at an early age, lost his life while riding on the running board of the crowded musicians car. The car was side swiped by a truck and Grayson instantly lost his life without seeing a thing. Grayson and Whittier both coming from very poor families, had just began to taste a little success with the successful release of "Handsome Molly" (1927). Although Grayson was blind, he could now afford a car but could not drive. His life was tragically cut short on August 16th 1930
