Talk about memories. Johnny Mueller was a good friend of our family when I was growing up, and I nearly always stopped at that garage in Louisville on my way home from school. He had the first TV set in the neighborhood, a little 8" screen mounted over the office door. I ran from school so I could get there in time to see part of the opening game of the 1949 World Series. Made it just in time to see Tommy Henrich of the Yankees hit the game-winning home run in the bottom of the ninth. John kept this car, or a newer one like it, around for a long time. I remember seeing this photo hanging on the wall of the garage.

At that time, the garage had moved about half a block from Franck & Payne to Franck & Frankfort Avenue.

His brother, Fred, owned and operated the Old Toll House tavern across Frankfort Avenue from the garage.

Sometime in the 50s, John closed the garage. He and his wife moved to Florida and bought a motel.

Meers is still very much alive and worth anyone's time if you get near Lawton, Oklahoma. Take the Medicine Park exit off I-44 and follow the signs. It's a bit more yuppified these days but the food is still awesome.

  5. The grill on that '53 is an example of what happened to that "Korean chrome". Our's did the same thing in just a few years and dad could'nt justify the expense of replating, so we lived with it probably five years, it was our family car for twelve.

Looks like "wagon" springs (or "409" springs) up front with perhaps some rubber spacers to help get the front up. Classic mid-60s '55 street machine.

Dunno, you might be right. Like a '34 Ford, the lines are love at first sight.

Some of the best hamburgers anywhere are served here in Meers, Oklahoma. It is well worth the side trip! It hasn't changed much.

Thunder Road is my favorite movie of all time. Mom and Dad took me to see it when it first came out in 1958. I have a copy and watch it several times a year. Lucas Doolin was a bad a$$ dude in the movie.

Does anyone know what color Robert Mitchum's '57 Ford was? Since the movie was in black/white, there are only black/white photos ever shown anywhere.

J.C.Whitney had these dual headlight kits available in '58. Didn't take 'em long to get on the market. Below ad is from July 1958:
