Anybody who loves old steam should search the posts by Moe (or, maybe it was LN7) on the "Wreck of the Old 97," a few months back.

Men worked hard to get up to the position of being the honored engineer piloting an engine. I'm sure some died at their posts and got the blame for wrecks that were somebody else's fault, Switching errors would be one. In the case of the Ol' 97 in 1904 and the Powhantan Arrow in '46, I myself believe that the dead engineers took the official blame for trying to maintain unrealistic schedules which resulted in equipment faliure. The 97 toppled off e tressle, and the Arrow was running maybe 30 mph too fast and (my theory) the bed gave allowing the engine to derail and turn on its side. In both cases the engineers were going to fast, but by choice or to maintain their honor (and jobs) by bringing 'er into the station on time? You be the judge.

Plym, that is a fair point. But a dedicated crew would do their best to stop the train or at least minimize damage, before they got clear. If you jumped too soon, you would have been disgraced and never (I suspect) work as an engineer again.

I don't think that is the reason. It IS the reason RRs got away from wooden framed cabeese, as they could disentegrate if pushed too hard. R

Rembmer when RRs reduced train crew sizes (loosing the rear end crew) over Union objections, and then made the blinking little red light to replace them? I'm not 100 percent sure, but I've been told a few times that was the reason the caboose was no longer needed. Gary

Gray, I still remember that we kids used to enjoy the fella in any caboose. He was the one who always did the PR thing and waved and smiled at everybody as they cleared a grade intersection and left a town. I always felt cheated when, finally, cabooses were just left back in the yard.:(

The OHV conversion was "ARDUN inspired", so, when Chrysler became the major shareholder in late 1966, Chrysler also inherited another "Chrysler Hemi".

The Tacoma Narrows Bridge was the sister bridge to the old bridge... Maine DOT had the same isses about this bridge "flying" in the wind that would somtimes come up the Penobscot. There were plans to place airfoils on the bridge to fight that tendency to "fly"... but it was later discovered that the cables were starting to fail. MeDOT actuall put microphones on the cables so they could listen to the strands twang when the individual strands broke. (emergency secondary cables were added, they can be seen in the pics..) So it was decided to replace the bridge.

YellerSpirit, no matter how many times this station gets reposted, I think it's
a classic! Any idea specifically WHERE in Maine and about what year?? Thanks!
