I just called Vintage speed and told them they can keep my cores I sent them a year ago. They were holley 847's for my inliner. I decided that instead of paying this ass for his crappy work and to hear his lies I wold just kill the deal and now he is out the money I was willing to pay to get them done. I found 2 cores and built them my self and they work fine so I recived a good learning experence for my money. I am also going to write every rod mag this jackass has an ad in and tell the my experence with there advertiser. I am sick of seeing this looser screw poeple out of there hard earned money. I know this is old news but I think it needs to be brought up every now and then so people new to the sceen dont get suckered buy these low lifes. Thankyou to the honest people how do good work and lets promote those who do.
The messed up thing is I dealt with Charlie for years then he started taking a slide downhill. I stopped dealing with him about 4 or 5 years ago. He seems to have gotten worse. I bought a bunch from him through the 90's, now no more.... and his wife needs to stay off the phone....
I consider myself very lucky to have got a twin two barrel adapter from him a year ago, considering im three thousand miles away...not much recourse if he didnt deliver. you dont need charlie price for your chrome carbs..theres many other reputable carb repairers out there, and if there is a simpler carb to work on yourself than 94s or 97s id be amazed.do em yourself, its easy and fun!
Try Josh (a HAMBer....haven't seen him around in a while now that I think of it..??) at 97heaven. Haven't read a bad word yet.........unlike Vintage Speed.
I called Vintage speed last month to order 3 carb kits for the Ramrods HA/GR dragster and told his answering machine I wanted him to overnite them. He still hasn't called me back. Bought 'em from Speedway and got 'em the next day!
97 Heaven here in Chicago area is super top notch when it comes to 94s and 97s, and both the proprietor and his dad are HAMBers (HotRodJosh and gregg). http://www.97heaven.com/
There are a couple of good fella's over on the Fordbarn, too.........Ken Ct. comes to mind....been doing it for years. There's another guy that emailed me about 2 months ago, he has been doing it for years too. If you want, let me know and I'll find his info... Speedway, for all their cheap crap (even though I keep buying), did make my last order right with NO questions asked. I told them what they messed up on, and they sent replacements...had them in 2 days........I was impressed.
While he may suck on rebuilding, if you use his online store you get the parts pretty quick. I did this a couple of times lately and have no bitch with the delivery or the parts. The only problem with Josh is that he doesn't return emails or telephone calls. If you happen to get him on the phone then there is usually no ploblem. It must be something with the carb cleaner they use.
He is gettin married real soon like next week, he supposed to fix m 97 main body for me. i hope it doesnt cut into the honey moon Jay
"I didn't know they made a chrome carb kit." Just don't bend the gaskets, or the shiny stuff flakes right off!
There is a guy in Lawerence, Kansas rebuilding carbs and he does excellent work. He runs an ad in Hemmings. His name is Don Baxter and he's been around since the fifties. I don't know if he does chrome setups.
It surprises me that I never see Jere Jobe's name come up on the carb topic. He's been around for a long time. I had him build me 3 S'berg 48s about a year ago. He had them done (no cores) within about a week. Unfortunately I have only seen photos of them because they went missing in action a couple of times. NO FAULT OF JEREs. He shipped them very promptly to a relative in Iowa for me. That's when the comedy of errors began. Hoping I may see them in the flesh someday (soon). Jeres advice and service was impeccable. http://www.vintagecarburetiontech.com/pages/709768/index.htm Pete
Pete, You beat me to it. I have had Jere do some work for me and the man and his work, word and knowledge are all sterling! He and his wife went to school with my mom back in the 50's here in So Cal and some of the stories he told me were worth the price of admission. There may be some less expensive than Jere but I don't know if there is any better.
When I asked Larry Fulton who he sends people to for 97 work since he concentrates on Rochesters, I hadn't finished asking the question when he replied Jere Jobe.
We got a guy in Milwaukee,Wi that's great too...his name's Gordy Teschendorf....he rebuilt carbs for some of the Cheaters, and he did my 6 chrome 97's....don't ask him to do any more chrome ones though....hates them with a passion...all of the passageways get filled up with crap from the plating process...makes it a real bitch to rebuild 'em....
You try Northwest Speed? I haven't gotten any carbs from them, but they advertise them on their site. http://www.nwspeedequipment.com/cat_indsysparts1.php?id=5
Jere Jobe was the founder of 97 heaven before he sold it in the early 90's to a friend of mine in Illinois, who then sold it to Josh.Jere has been doing them forever.
