I know there was a mile race in Missouri for the sprint cars, around 72. I believe it was a qualifer for the Tampa show. Maybe someone can correct me on that. 25 Lap feature? Won by David James in the Yankee and the Rebel car, #98. I have a pic somewhere.

I believe this is Langhorne 1955, with Mike Nazaurk, in the Nyquist sprinter, on the high side in (possibly) his last race. The car on the inside looks a lot like Tommy H. in the M/P special (?)

I have been reading this thread with interest for a long time, but have not had anything worth adding until recently. My son Scott sent me a picture of this 1932 Studebaker Indy car for my birthday. I had given him the signed original many years ago. I actually found the original picture in a junk wooden desk I had bought at an auction in 1978. That picture was signed by Luther Johnson, I presume at Indy in 1932. I gave the original to Scott many years ago as he always admired it. He returned a copy to me last Friday for my birthday. (and kept the original-no dummy! Ha)
I think this is one of only two Indy cars that Studebaker raced. Hope it fits this thread okay!!

Thanks ... I was going to ride over to the old Ho-Ho-Kus track area today but other things got in the way. Yes, Chris would know. My father built a car for Ho-Ho-Kus but they never got it to the track. Unfortunately he has passed on so I can't show him this picture. I have a few old photos that he took there back then ... I'll scan and post them soon.

Thanks! I'm on that site but find it a little tough to search around on it. You do know that Chris E. is not down at the NSSN offices ... he's up here in northeast NJ not far from where NSSN used to be published. Mike K. should be able to get the shot to him though. I'd love to know if that shot and the other one are from Ho-Ho-Kus ... and would like to see more from there.

Sat down to peruse my latest NSSN today and, coincidently, this is the 2nd paragraph in Chris' notebook. The pic is suppose to be him at HHK in the 30s.

Fits fine, with the introduction of the 'junk formula' (production based engines) in 1930 it opened the door for all the mfgs. The 32 Indy shows 8 Studebaker powered entries, of which 4 were factory backed I believe. All qualified (started 40 cars) with Bergere finishing 3rd and Johnston finishing 16th. For 1933 they came back with this lineup:

Yeah, Race Artist, I was aware that Chris isn't in the offices, but I don't have an e-mail address for him and I figured Mike or Corinne would get it to him.

This is the last time I saw the Deuce, it was at Jungle Park last fall. It had a gunsmith stuck on the left rear.

    Speedwagen,
We need to get that old gunsmith on here. He knows as much about old Sprint raceing in In. as most anybody. Ask him if he ever gave Bobby Grim a Coke.

    Rootie-
Another great pic! He was one of my favorite drivers when i was young; when i heard of his death, i couldnt believe it. I just never saw Jim take crazy chances like some guys did every race.
His Champ Car owner, Doug Stearly, had a trucking company yard at his home in Collegeville, PA., only about ten miles from my area. In fact, he kept the dirt car in a carport next to his house. That was the red #42.
    Times sure have changed!

    Since i think you guys are the foremost experts on racing history, i have one for you;
Recently i ran into an older guy who said he had worked on the champ dirt car owned by Tassi Vatis from NY.
He claims that one year they ran a dirt car race in Argentina, on a TWO mile dirt oval!! I know ive never heard of a dirt oval that big.
He said that Ben Warren drove the #94, and got burned in this race.
I dont remember Warren ever driving that car; i saw Johnny Hubbard run it once.
The Vatis equipment seemed top notch; should have been since Tassi had big bucks; shipping magnate!
So, my question is; did such a race ever happen, and who has pics from it?
Did any of you know Hugh Randall, from Louisville, KY ? I saw him run only once, for half a lap in the notorious Vargo #35 at Langhorne. That car then leaped the highest into the air ive ever seen, and Randall was gone.
    Thanks for any info.

Spike I'm far from a 'foremost expert' on anything, but yes they did run a race in Arg. in 1971. However it wasn't on a dirt track and yes, BW got burned there. They ran the R/E cars of the time, and I really don't keep track of pics of those cars, but I'm sure they're out there.

Very sad to hear that, he was indeed a legend and great ambassador of the sport.

Spike, Hugh Randall was a good friend of mine after I came out of the service in 1960. I watched him drive hardtops at Jeffersonville, Ind. and then sprints in USAC and elsewhere. Even stooged for him once at a dirt track in Rooster Lake, Ky. I was crushed when I got the word from Langhorne that afternoon. I didn't know until I went to the funeral home that his brother, Dick Randall, had been a classmate of mine in junior high school. Somewhere on a CD around here I've got a photo Dennis Unger sent me of him sitting in a Taraschi Formula Junior. He drove the old Fetter Brothers sprinter, as I recall.

I don't recall ever hearing about a two-mile dirt oval, either, but I do remember the old Memphis-Ark Speedway which I think was 1.5 dirt. We lost another Louisville driver, Cotton Priddy, in a NASCAR race at that track.

Very sorry to hear about Lloyd.

Lloyd was indeed one of the best ever. Even ran very well in a RE car on the dirt at Nazareth, PA.

Speaking of races in 'far away lands' I have always been intrigued by the Race(s) of Two Worlds in Monza Italy. Bunch of ol' dirt trackers putting to the F-1 set.:D Here's a few pics I've found over the years.

Spike, not to pick nits but, Vargo's champ car was number 63 when Hugh was killed, previous numbers were 53 and 56. Jake Vargo's midget and sprinter were number 35 so it is easy to confuse.

Love the Monza pictures there Rootie, it is a mix of the two years the race was run.
