In the early 90's while I was working at Hajduk's I rebodied Danny Milburn's Oz champ car with a CAE style body. Made a grille for it and all. We made the right side rock shield out of Lexan so that it was hardly visible. The only concession to progress was the box that we put over the injectors although I made that as contoured as possible to fit with the body style.
Sadly Danny lost his life in the car at Phoenix the first time that he ran it.

We got to hear The one dad did work on at Zakira's. Idling.. the best comparison I can give you is a Solid lifter Big Block chev.. Very deep, very Michanical. Reved quick.. I could tell that at high RPM it would have a high pitch to it though.. I'd love to here one.. (Ad that to the reason I picked 54' to 64' as my time travel years!!)

Spent about an hour, a couple of days ago chatting with Billy Jr. about his dad and 60s/70s sprint car and midget racing.

Nice shot of Frank Lockhart driving a "bobtail" at Ascot wearing the Italian helmet that they presented to the winner of the "helmet dash"

Roy,.. Didn't I see the nose piece of this STP car hanging in a bar, or a shop in INDY?

I believe you will find that piece in "Zoom" Long's radiator shop.

I'd say Rex mays... Wilbur Shaw was no slouch...

On this picture... Just another reason I like "Pit shots", check out the "T" bar to slowly turn the engine over in the pits... I guess?

How would you ever be able to say who was the best???
Lockhart, Mays, Meyer, Vuky, Foyt, it's not possible.

  24. As much as I hate to admit it since I am a Foyt fan, Vuky I think was the best in his prime. From nowhere to King in such a short time and even one pole run finished in the rain. Had he lived, his streamliner would have extended his wins since he was with Travers and Coon. It took a huge wreck to kill a huge talent.

  25. Meyer was a huge talent but I do know he had great financing and reliability in a time when those were hard to find. Ironicly, he found his greatest support from a crewmember early on who just happened to be one of the richest young men in the country. This was discovered when he wrecked the best car he could put together and the crewmember asked "What will we do now?". To wit, Meyer fired back "What do you mean 'WE'?". Of course the rest is history.

  26. My Dad a few months after 1969 ended, give or take a year. That's me in the front seat wondering what all the commotion is about.

Let's not forget Mauri Rose. But IMHO I have to give the nod to A.J. Consider: 4 times in-- F/E roadster-- early non-aero R/E-- aero dependant R/E, over a 10+ year period. Huge talent!

Too cool, Roy, looks like Danny had his "race face" perfected early, Steve Kinser has nothing on him. :D
