I'd also like to thank my son, Chad, who is a Marine F-18 Hornet pilot out of Miramar, protecting us all so we can do the things we love. Semper Fi.

I could use some help from the experts here...bought these old photos at a swap meet in PA some years ago, the old gent that had them said they hung on the wall of a local speed shop for years (Langhorn?) so I'm guessing at least some of them were local hot shoes....anyway it always bugged me that I couldn't i.d. the drivers (forgive me - I'm more of a hot rod/drag car aficionado)....pretty sure the dude in the leather jacket driving the "46" is Dutch Schaefer but then I see someone else in the same car...the rest I have no idea. Sorry I couldn't scan them in, they have been in the frames so long they are sticking to the glass....back of the photos reads "Roth Studios, Washington Ave, Bronx NY"

Neither of the drivers in the #46 look like Dutch to me......
Dutch always wore his hair slicked straight back in any photo I`ve ever seen of him,and anytime I ever saw him.
#33 and #24 looks like the same driver.
Nice photos,I hope someone knows the rest of these drivers.

Nicky and Tommy are the only ones I know out of these.

The NOVI #15 at Indy is most likely Duke Nalons' ride... It was sponsored by PURE oil when he was in it with that number.. Mobilgas with other drivers.

    Killer pics! THANKS!!

yeah that's one of my favorite pics, I like how ol' Bob has that helmet balanced on his head....I bet he pulled it down tight when he got that sucker rolling.
Pretty sobering when you start researching these guys one by one...lot of them gone way too young.

Eddie Wirth..... one of the greatest drivers I ever met as a kid. I have a helmet of his, one of the coolest gifts I ever recieved.

Here's two more I thought you might enjoy as long as I'm posting here...

Clark Gable and Barbara Stanwick on the set of "To Please a Lady"

Gable's stunt double next to the "Mike Brannan Special"

photos again courtesy of the Stan Betz collection

    > On a side note, Stan Betz was stricken with polio as a child and wound up in the same Los Angeles hospital room as famed cam grinder and land speed racer Chet Herbert. Barbara Stanwick was one of the celebreties who came to visit the children's ward and purchased brand new B&W T.V. sets for all the rooms..........

And the photographer was ELI Roth .. he was quite an enjoyable charachter .. who I picked up on the side of the road more than once (when what ever old wreck he was driving at the time broke down) and loaded ALL his stuff in my car & went off to the races!!

Ole' Eli taught me a lot (which I've forgotten obviously) about photography.

Eli was the official or maybe unofficial photographer for the ARDC for MANY years.

    His wife (Ula) was blind.

That doesn't look like "Dutch" Schaefer to me in the leather jacket in the #46.

The owner of the #4 was Charlie Hophan.

Again (as in previous post) the photographer was Eli Roth.

If I can make a suggestion .. post these pictures on the .. "Cageless" Midget Picture thread too & maybe you'll get some more answers.

If you like, I'll Private Message you with Marty Himes's phone number .. he can tell you how to get those pictures unstuck from the glass, without damaging them. ...... Let me know.

BTW -- I just found out that "Dutch" Schafer's Grandson is here on H.A.M.B. with us.

EDITED with the help of JIM NISE

The first #46 -- Bob Courtwright, Sr.
The second #46 -- Charlie Miller
    #33 -- Freddie Meeker
    #4 -- Chuck Arnold
    #24 -- Fred "Jiggs" Peters

Good to see the 404 cars of Merkler Machine. They were racing CSRA mostly. Their shop was about a half mile from my house.

I'm glad, makes me feel better about using a splined axle in my car. I'll ask my usual suspects if they have any extras.

Back when we ran, the biggest cubes you could run was the (about) 17 cu. in. class.
Everybody usually ran 3 West Bend 5.80's. It was the "C super" class.
The 5.80 looked just like the West Bend 7.10's.
We used to cheat and run 3 Bender 7.10's!
    The sucker would REALLY go!

Corngrower, do you know what the engines are?

By the way, in '59 when we ran at Blackhawk Farms racecourse in Wisconsin.... Even against the Meister Brauser Scarabs... the track record was held by a C super kart...
